Backing Up Video To Remote Location Via URL

Our client has or will have multiple locations. Apartment Communities. Each site will run a VMS, and they want the VMS to back up to a cloud server nightly. The cloud server is their own server, and would be accessible via a URL.

We only have one site with them, and that site has about 20 cameras.

They want to be able to access video on that backup from a client in the main office.

Other than bandwidth, what other challenges are we looking at?

We asked DW and they said they can not back up to a URL. We talked to Milestone and they said yes, but referred me to an engineer, which I just emailed and waiting on a response from.

I assume the client wants to do this because they have invested in HDD space at their main office. I wonder if it would be better to just use RAID at each site.

What I seemed to be having a hard time explaining to the client, is that they are not going to go into the "Z" drive and look for video files. They will need the client.

When a backup like this is done, does the VMS automatically start purging files after a certain time frame? I know you can configure days in Milestone, just not sure about backups and archives.

Hello Jay,

Contact me at mdelsalto@blackboxusa.com

We are working on multiple solutions from direct evidence export to cloud storage and a special integration for Windows based servers that allows for automated backup via the VMS currently being tested with DW Spectrum / NX Witness.

Happy to help out!

Thanks Matthew but we are looking for a solution where the video can be backed up to their own servers/storage.

The solution can be configured to use their own storage depending on the type of storage endpoint - iscsi/nfs/smb and quite a few other options.

Thank you.

One option you can consider is having the VMS server write to NAS and let the NAS push to the cloud(Azure/AWS/Back Blaze). This may seem difficult to setup and manage, your choice if you choose this route. For those that have installed Xprotect within and XCP-NG vm, write to FreeNas and rsync over SSH will know exactly what I am talking about. 20 cameras per site seems easy enough to manage.

I am still a XenServer 7.2 user but have been very interested in what's happening over at XCP-NG. Especially after the feature reductions of 7.3 onwards. I am curious if you perceive any trade-offs going to XCP or is it all upside and gooey goodness? Also trying to figure out if it's got the legs to go the distance as it were.

I spoke to Milestone and they have a pretty good solution for this, and that is the option we are going to lead with.

Jay,

Do you mind sharing the solution name or details? Interested to see what you mean by backup to URL - FTP/S3/SMB/ISCSI etc. Thank you!

I do not know the details, just that it is part of their archiving solution and it is included with the software. We still have to get more details, but they said it was straight forward and the user would never know when data was moved from the local server, to the remote server, minus a little lag due to the data being offsite.
