What is your opinion of out-of-warranty repair by Axis?

We have used it a few times but not really enough for it to be a huge concern for us.  Usually it ends up being $300-$400 then when you add in labor to remove it and replace it you are getting close to the cost of just buying a new one.  I have not heard that they no longer do it though we will have to ask our Axis rep about it.

No problem.  For us its a cost and then the opportunity cost of going without a camera until we can get ours back are why we don't use this.  Also I will admit that Axis gives us exceptional support and will even RMA cameras for us after the warranty period to an extent just did a few that were 3-6 months past their 3 year warranty.

The times we have done repair were due to the cost of the original camera.  We had a Q8721-E that decided it no longer liked where it was mounted and fell 30' to the ground.  The repair was $4000 dollars and took a few weeks.  Had the camera not been $21,000 in the first place we would have walked away and gone new.  Most cameras we can get within a few days new so if a $1000 camera goes down and the out of warranty repair is $400 an additional service trip from integrator, $200 or so more and two weeks with no camera it just makes more sense to our business to spend $400 more and get a new camera with 3 year warranty in place now than gamble that this device will function for 1-3 more years problem free to make the $400 savings worth while.

It sounds like it was well worth the repair!  We repair about 100 out-of-warranty Axis cameras per month but have never received that particular model.  Our highest standard price (we have repaired 121 different models) is $500, but no doubt the motherboard and the dome would have broken, falling from that height.  I imagine it would have ultimately cost $1000-$1400 including extra parts (which we would have had to purchase from Axis probably).  I suspect we would have had it repaired in 10 days.  It sounds as if Axis behaves very professionally and responsibly.  I know their products are well built and excellent.  What was communicated to us by one of their reps -- that they no longer perform out-of-warranty repairs -- turns out to wrong.  I have checked today with several C level execs at Axis.

Best of luck and thank you for the insight!  Jonathan

Axis response:

Axis provides out of warranty repairs, which means that we offer support for products up until 5 years after we have stopped selling them. The main reason for not always being able to provide support for products older than that is because we can’t guarantee that we have necessary spare parts for older products.

I removed the sentence in the OP that claimed otherwise to avoid confusion. Thanks.
