During my time as an integrator, there were several times that "Acts of God" (power surges due to lightning, hail, high winds, falling trees/limbs, etc.,) would break or damage equipment ranging from cameras and card readers to switches and servers. Even when things are/were triple checked, wiring is tight & right, and proper precautions were taken, if it was electronic, it could find a way to break.
For example, a few days after a beefy storm, a school district called and said their doors were not working. Once on site, I found the panel to be at fault, as when I would connect power, it would make an eerie high pitch squeal and the LED's on the board would flash on and off. The replacement was not covered under warranty due to "Act of God", but was replaced and all was well (because what is the school going to do, not use their doors?).
