Use the IPVM Camera Finder.

Here are my results:

  • ACTi - B51:
    • Fixed focus = 1.9mm lens
    • AoV = 129 degrees
  • Arecont - AV5255PMIR-SAH:
    • Varifocal lens = 3.0 - 8.0mm
    • AoV = 43 - 113 degrees
  • Hikvision - DS-2DE4220:
    • Varifocal lens = 4.2 - 94.0mm
    • AoV = 3 - 58 degrees

An interesting find on the Hikvision DS-2DE4220; the widest angle at 4.2mm is only 58 degrees while the telephoto angle is 3 degrees. That is a very tightly zoomed shot.

In the camera finder, locate the camera you want to report on and click on it to open a new page. Scroll down and locate the 'Lens / Imaging' section, this is where you will find this information.

You can choose any 3 cameras you like. The lenses can be fixed, varifocal, motorized, etc. Report any interesting observations or questions that come up as you are researching this.

Hello,

Here are my results:

1. Axis P5635-E:

  • Varifocal lens (PTZ) = 4.3 - 129.0 mm
  • AoV = 2.4 - 63.5 degrees

2.Mobotix Mx-Q25-D16

  • Fixed focus = 1.6 mm
  • AoV = 180.0 degrees

3. Panasonic WV-SFV781L

  • Varifocal lens = 4.2 - 25.2 mm
  • AoV = 17.0 - 100.0 degrees

An interesting find on the Panasonic WV-SFV781L; the widest angle at 4.2mm is 100.0 degrees while the telephoto angle is 17.0 degrees. That is a very wide zoomed shot if we compare to Axis P5635-E because the size of the imager of Panasonic WV-SFV781L is 1/1.7" inch while the size of the imager of Axis P5635-E is 1/2.8”.

Here are my results:

1. Avigilon 2.0W-H3PTZ-DP20

  • Varifocal Lens (PTZ) = 4.7 - 94mm
  • AOV = 2.9 - 55.2 Degrees

2. Pelco IMP519-1EI

  • Varifocal Lens = 3.0 - 9mm
  • AOV = 30 - 88 Degrees

3. VIVOTEK SF8174V

  • Fixed Lens = 1.5mm
  • AOV = 180, 360 Degrees

It was really interesting comparing the different cameras and just seeing how the cameras can be so alike and still have a slightly different view. Can this be attributed to the manufacturers trying to cut cost of production and maybe not using the best parts or more just a design flaw in the camera that could limit its abilities?

One example would be that certain PTZ cameras that i looked at had a much more limited range of tilt than others. Even though the lens length and AOV were very similar to the model I was comparing it to.

Hi,
My results are below :
Axis M3004-V (220$)
Fixed focal lens : 2.8 mm
Aov : 80°

Hikvision DS-2CD2112F-IWS (160$)
Fixed focal : 2.8 mm
AoV : 92.5

VIVOTEK FD8154 (220£$)
Fixed focal : 2.8 mm
AoV : 101°

I find that the difference of AoV with the same lens is very huge over 20%
Now I understand that it’s better to look only the AoV.
It’s also interesting to see the variation and the relation between distance, width and ppm
Interesting !

The v02 and the v03 are also the same price yet have significant differences with FoL, AoV and the Imager, v02 is ½” and the v03 is 1/3” and the v03 costs $560 more than the v02. The v09 is the same price as the v02 and its FoL is much longer and the AoV is much tighter (fits within the vo2). So many differences within the same form factor among the three.

In order from least to most expensive (all are dome PTZs):

Pelco IMP519-1L $750

Focal Length: 3.0-9.0mm AoV: 30-88 degrees

Arecont VisionAV 10255PMTIR-SH $990

Focal Length: 12.0-22.0mm AoV: 17-30 degrees

FLIR DNZ30TL2R $1,500

Focal Length: 5.0mm-129.0 mm AoV: 21.1-58.9 degrees

The interesting point is the difference in focal lengths between the three cameras. The Pelco is designed for close-intermediate range applications while the FLIR is used relatively long range applications, hence the longer focal lengths possible.

Hi all,

I compare 1.3MP (720P) varifocal dome:

ACTi ACM-7411, Lens Focal Length: 3.3mm - 12.0mm , AoV: 23° - 83°, Imager Size: 1/3"

Bosch Security NDN-41012-V3, Lens Focal Length: 3.3mm - 10.0mm, AoV: 35.3° - 105°, Imager Size: 1/2.7"

Hikvision DS-2CD2712F-IS, Lens Focal Length: 2.8mm - 12.0mm, AoV: 30.2° - 98.4°, Imager Size: 1/3"

Interesting!

Same imager size of ACTi and HikVision, 1/3", same focal length at 12mm, the AoV differs a lot! 23 Deg v.s. 30.2 Deg.

Imager size differs 10%, Bosch and ACTi, 1/2.7" v.s. 1/3", same focal length at 3.3mm, the AoV differs 20% ! 83 Deg v.s. 105 Deg.

So the AoV is quite different from different manufacturers and different camera.

  • Panasonic WV-SFR631L
    Lens Focal Length = 2.8mm - 10mm
    AoV = 28 - 102 degrees

I approached this from a little more than just the AoV numbers themselves, and tried to compare cameras as if I was looking at what to purchase, taking the AoV into account. The Axis camera is a 5mp camera only capable of 12fps and a AoV range of only 54 degrees for $1,170. The Hikvision camera is a 6mp camera capable of 24fps, with an AoV range of 64 degrees for a price of $740. Based on those numbers alone, it is a much more versatile, smoother camera for around $400 less. The Panasonic is a 3mp, 30 fps camera, with the largest AoV range of 74 degrees. The variety of shots capable with this camera may justify the $850 price tag, at a higher fps. However, if a higher megapixel is desired, it is the least impressive in that department. This shows that you often will need to weigh positives and negatives of each camera when contrasting ones with very similar specs, and that price is often not a good indicator of performance.

Hello,

Here are my results for some of the cameras we are considering for our tech refresh:

1. Vivotek FD836B-HTV (not available on camera finder, from data sheet)
•Varifocal lens = 2.8 - 12.0 mm
•FoV = 42 - 105 degrees

1a. Vivotek FD8363 (next closest to FD836B)
•Varifocal lens = 3 - 9 mm
•AoV = 38 - 104 degrees

2. Vivotek FD8181V (Fisheye, panoramic, dewarped on camera)
•Fixed focus = 1.5 mm
•AoV = 360.0 degrees

3. Hikvision DS-2DE4220-AE(3) PTZ
•Varifocal lens = 4.7 - 94 mm
•AoV = 3.0 - 58.0 degrees

4. Hikvision DS-2CD4526FWD-IZH (low light)
•Varifocal lens = 2.6 - 12 mm
•AoV = 32 - 92.0 degrees

The Vivotek PTZ shows a very small angle of view but since this is a PTZ this should not be a problem.

Interesting the Vivotek FD826B-HTV has the same size lens as the Hikvision DS-2CD4526FWD-IZH (12mm) yet the Hikvision is considered a low light camera. There must be some other image processing taking place on the Hikvision to get down to 0.01 lux with color.

I am still unable to make a "general reply" in the forums, it will only let me reply to other replies. I have this problem in Chrome and Explorer. Anyway... here's the assignment... Hikvision DS-2cd4585F-IZ(H) Focal Lenth is 2.8 to 12mm and AoV is 32.6 to 96 degrees. Sony SNC-XM631 Focal Length is 2.8mm and AoV is 113 degrees. Immediately notice that at 2.8mm focal length, this camera has a much wider AoV than the previously mentioned Hikvision at the same focal length. Sony SNC-HM662 Focal lenth 0.98 to 1.12mm, with 360 degree FoV.

I've got:

Acti ACM-3701E

Fixed focal length 3.6mm

AoV 72 degrees

Dahua DH-IPC-HDBW4120F

Fixed focal length 3.6mm

AoV 67.38 degrees (from Camera Calculator)

Vivotek MD8531H

Fixed focal length 3.6mm

AoV 67.38 degrees (from Camera Calculator)

Interestingly, the data sheet for the Dahua camera shows an AoV of 74 degrees with the 3.6mm lens, and the Vivotek spec'd with the same 3.6mm focal length shows 80 degree horizontal AoV.

My guess is that the IPVM camera calculator must use a general calculation for AoV when dealing with models where different fixed focal length lenses can be spec'd. Could this be changed to offer a more accurate calculation? Or is the manufacturer way off? (It shouldn't surprise anyone if this is the case)

I looked up the following three (3) cameras.

Arecont Vision AV2245PM-D-LG

Varifocal lens = 3.0 - 10mm

AoV = 36 - 117 degrees

Comments: I was hoping for true WDR given where some of these cameras might be placed in corridors with windows to outside on one side.

Axis Q6044-E

PTZ lens = 4.4 - 132mm

AoV = 2.2 - 62.9 degrees

Comments: Zoom on this camera is even tighter than Brian's Hikvision DS-2DE4220.

Arecont 2225PMIR

Varifocal lens = 3.0 - 9mm

AoV = 37 - 115 degrees

General Comments: I found the mug shot with license plate very helpful in evaluating camera performance, especially if you adjust the focal length or FoV/Aov.

**Samsung SND-7080F

Varifocal Lens = 3-8.5mm

AoV = 35.3-100 degrees

**Pelco IME119-1ES

Varifocal Lens = 3-9mm

AoV = 30-84 degrees

**Avigilon 5.0-H3_D01

Varifocal Lens = 3-9mm

AoV = 28-84 degrees

It's interesting that the AoV measurements vary. The imager sizes for each camera did too, so I'm guessing that played at least some part in the discrepancy.

Hello,

Here are my results:

1. ACTi B51 Dome:

  • Lens Focal Length: 1.9mm
  • AoV: 129°

2. ACTi E69 Dome:

  • Lens Focal Length: 2.8mm - 12.0mm
  • AoV: 35° - 92°

3. Samsung - SND-7080:

  • Varifocal lens = 3.0 - 8.5mm
  • AoV = 35.3 - 100 degrees

An interesting find on the Samsung - SND-7080; the widest angle at 3.0mm is 100 degrees while the telephoto angle is 35.3 degrees at 8.5mm in comparison to Acti E69 which provides telephoto angle of 35.0 degrees at 12.0mm and wide angle of 92 degrees at 2.8mm. Although Samsung has more AOV compare to Acti..

Samsung SNV-8081R:

Vari: 3.6-9.4

AoV: 39.2 - 104

Avigilon 3.0W-H3-DO1:

Vari: 3.0-9.0

AoV: 28-84

Vivotek FD9371-HTV:

Vari: 3.0-9.0

AoV: 41-86

The imager size on the Samsung was a "huge" 1 1/8" compared to the 1/2.8" of the Vivotek and the 1/3" of the Avigilon. They were all about the same price, but for the money it looks like the Samsung was the best. The only other advantage that the other two may have had was the 3x optical zoom of the Avigilon.

Also, the Samsung had Corridor Mode, which is really sweet. Here is the article describing it: http://ipvm.com/reports/corridor-mode-tested

Hello,

Here are the three cameras that I have selected:

Bosch Security NTI-50022-V3

  • Varifocal lens = 3.0mm - 10.0mm
  • AoV = 36 - 107 degrees

Axis P1405-E

  • Varifocal lens = 2.8mm - 10.0mm
  • AoV = 34 -93 degrees

Pelco EVO-05NID

  • Fixed focus = 1.6mm
  • AoV = None (panoramic)

The imager size on all of these cameras is less than 1/3". All three are very close to 1/3" but not exactly there.
