Looking at the variances here, let's compare a 'high end' auto-focusing camera to a 'low end' manual focus camera.

It appears that, at best, we are talking about 1 hour average labor savings. Agree / disagree?

To that end, is that worth paying $100 more?

The real benefit is shown when dealing with cameras in hard to reach areas where you cannot easily get to them with a ladder. If a lift is needed to reach the camera and a later re-focus is needed, the money spent on the autofocus camera is well worth the $100 up charge. If the camera is on an 8'-10' drop ceiling in a retail shop, it may not be worth it. As an installer, I prefer to have it if the budget allows. It seems to be easier to get the optimum focus with auto vs manual.

Dumb question. When you ask "How many manhours would you estimate X will take?", do you mean the integrator's estimate of

  • The time it would actually take if task X were timed or
  • The time they would normally put on a customer quote for task X or
  • Either

does set-up include system hardening? happy to see firmware upgrade mentioned, I "save the world" too often by simply recommending they do an upgrade.

Once again, IPVM forum provides very useful benchmarking information from a Project Management perspective.
