The assignment for class 4 is to research and report on a PoE switch.

Look online for a PoE switch and let us know if it's managed or unmanaged, the total power budget of the switch and how many PoE ports are available.

For example:

Switch model:

  • TP-LINK TL-SG1008P
  • 8 port PoE unmanaged switch

PoE details:

  • 53W max power budget
  • 4 PoE ports, 4 non-PoE ports
  • Max power per port: 15.4W

PoE Switch Details

Interesting notes:

The max PoE power available on the switch is 53W (53 / 4 = 13.25W per port). However, the max PoE power available per port is rated at 15.4W (15.4 * 4 = 61.6W).

If we had 4 cameras that required 15W each, the power budget would be overdrawn.

Make sure you are aware not only of the total power available per port, but also the total power budget, as they may not match up.

This is relatively new from Trendnet - reseller cost $324 + $131 power supply

Much cheaper managed, hardened, DIN rail poe switch. Buy a mile!

I use  Senstar’s Tungsten – Cyber Security Ethernet Switch at work, the manufacturer says it was specifically designed to cyber-secure physical security networks, SCADA based systems and safe-city applications.

This is a managed switch that utilizes endpoint protection.

Max power consumption is listed as 61.6W however it also says each port can accommodate 15.4W. 15.4 x 8 should be 123.2W so it would not meet the full power requirements if all ports were being used to the full extent.

Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI)

The switch discards ARP packets from a port if there is no static or dynamic IP/MAC bindings or if there is a discrepancy between the source or destination address in the ARP packet. This prevents man-in-the-middle attacks.

 

IP/Mac/Port Binding (IPMB)

The features (DHCP Snooping, IP Source Guard, and Dynamic ARP Inspection) above work together to prevent DOS attacks in the network, thereby increasing network availability.

 

Secure Core Technology (SCT)

Ensures that the switch will receive and process management and protocol traffic no matter how much traffic is received.

 

Secure Sensitive Data (SSD)

A mechanism to manage sensitive data (such as passwords, keys, etc) securely on the switch, populating this data to other devices, and secure autoconfig. Discovery

 

Bonjour

The switch advertises itself using the Bonjour protocol.

 

Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) (802.1ab) with LLDP-MED extensions

LLDP allows the switch to advertise its identification, configuration, and capabilities to neighboring devices that store the data in a MIB. LLDP-MED is an enhancement to LLDP that adds the extensions needed for IP phones.

 

Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)

The switch advertises itself using the Cisco Discovery Protocol. It also learns the connected device and its characteristics via CDP.

 

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

 

802.3af PoE and 802.3at PoE+ delivered over any of the RJ-45 ports within the listed power budgets

Switches support 802.3at PoE+, 802.3af, and Cisco pre-standard (legacy) PoE. Maximum power of 30.0W to any 10/100 or Gigabit Ethernet port for PoE+ supported devices and 15.4W for PoE supported devices, until the PoE budget for the switch is reached. Matthew, pixel count has no affect on the power required. The assignment is to look online for a PoE switch and let us know if it's managed or unmanaged, the total power budget of the switch and how many PoE ports are available.

I wanted to research something I had never seen before, so I went with the comnet (sic) CNGE26FX2TX24MSPOE1.

Managed or unmanaged: Managed

Total PoE budget: 720W (!!!)

Number of PoE ports: 24

PoE available per port: 30W

At 30W per port and 24 ports, this switch claims to be able to provide full power across all ports at the same time.

I searched Amazon.ca for the least expensive managed PoE switch that shipped via Prime, and this is what I found.

Switch Model:

  • TP-LINK - TL-SG108PE
  • 8 Port PoE Managed Gigabit Switch

Details:

  • A managed switch that allows for network monitoring, traffic prioritization and VLAN features
  • 8 port switch that has 4 PoE ports and 4 non PoE ports
  • 802.3 af compliant on 4 of the 8 ports
  • Maximum PoE Power Budget of 55W - the specs clearly state on this switch that it is "up to 15.4W for each port"
