I was looking up cost on some drives for a proposal and noticed that the WD Purple NV 6TB drive is DOUBLE the cost from last year. WTH is going on?

I see them for $199.00.   How cheap did you get them for last year?

I paid a little over $230 last year. I think you are looking at pricing for the non-NV model, to be honest. The model we use is the WD6NPURX, not the cheaper WD60PURX

Thanks to Bitcoin miners for graphics card prices, mobile market for DRAM, haven't heard anything about HDD. Picked up a 1TB blue drive for $35 couple days ago.

I have to say that since we started using the WD Purple drives we have experienced a hugely dramatic decrease in failure rates.  HDD failures used to the be the #1 cause of calls/complaints/failure reports but now instead of sending a shipment of 20 drives back to Seagate every other month, we've had one shipment of 20 WD Purple drives over the course of 1 YEAR.  Of course, your mileage may vary.  The engineering to produce a drive that is built for a more constant write-intensive environment rather than just using desktop drives which are designed for a more read-intensive environment has had fantastic returns.

Oops, disregard my message, I completely missed the "NV" portion of the model.

I just checked WD's website and it seems that they discontinued the NV version. That might be the answer to your question.

The new model number is WD60PURZ.

This link doesn't say anything about being discontinued. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I just haven't seen anything saying discontinued.

After looking at the spec sheets for the new Z series, it appears that they have merged the NV series into the standard Purple line, if I am reading this spec sheet correctly. Anything 4TB or larger says 8+ drives, which means they have the vibration sensors and tarnish resistance that made the NV series different from the standard Purple drive. Would have been nice if WD would make that info easier to find...

Purple NV is indeed EOL and has been merged into the standard Purple range. They send info to there partners (direct and in-direct) in a very detailed manner, I would recommend getting to know your local WD representative so you can be aware of when there is changes.

The reason for the variance in pricing is that distributors are looking to off load EOL models. The other reason is that WD have very strict polices on officially distributed product and if you buy from someone who has got them from China you will not be able to do warranty returns with WD direct so this also has a impact on who offers lower pricing.
