Pros/Cons Of PIN Only Access?

What is the stance on commercial access control systems using PIN codes only at some or even at all doors? (We are talking about medium to large systems with many doors here.) Is it considered a normal or sub-standard requirement? In such cases we recommend card readers with keypad that can accept manual "card number" entry, but that can be tricky to setup, at least on some readers... PIN entry is also considered lower security... thoughts?
