Milestone On AMD Based Servers

Hello all,

We have an installation where we will change the VMS in the site from Pelco to Milestone.

Usually, we are working with HP servers with Intel Xeon CPUs, but on this site, there are already new servers with AMD Opteron CPUs (2 on each server).

I've checked the Milestone calculator, but they only give the option for Intel on their builds. I spoke with their tech and he said that even though they recommend using Intel made CPUs, if the AMD has about the same power as the recommended Xeon, we should not have a problem.

The Passmark of these CPUs is about 11,000 (for both of them together) and the recommended Intel Xeon CPU for this build has a Passmark of about 9,000, so on paper, they should be strong enough.

Our workstation will be all Intel, so decoding on the clients should not be a problem.

Due to the fact that he said "should not" I wanted to check if somebody here ever had any issues with Milestone recording servers running on AMD CPU's.

Cheers,

When you build your server spec try using Milestone Pro as it does not use the Intel Quick Sync feature which could throw off you numbers.  I know there are a few Milestone guys on here so they can probably give a better answer but that is how we have done it in the past when reusing servers.

Hi UI1,

The person in tech support was correct.  If using an AMD processor, you just have to make sure the benchmark score is equal to or better than the benchmark score of the recommended Intel processor.  We have a lot of customers using AMD processors without any issues.  The online calculator doesn't take into account the Quick Sync functionality yet so you won't have to worry about that.

Let me know if you have further questions.
