Arizona Sun And Heat Causing Frequent Failure On IP Cameras, Any Solutions?

Hello all,

I have a customer with an opportunity in Arizona.  A local contractor mentioned they had to return Hikvision cameras fairly frequently due to failure.

The current install has cameras (vandal domes) mounted to the wall directly around a building with no shade.

I suggested considering sun shades of some sort for the cameras to help limit exposure.

I was told that ambient air temperature isn't the same as an object sitting directly in the sun.    The camera itself could be 20+% hotter than ambient air temps.

In Arizona this could mean an air temp of 120 degrees F and the camera could get as hot as 140-145 degrees.

This is outside the spec of most cameras I am familiar with.

Just curious if you have experience with installing cameras in hot/sunny environments and what your solutions are for high heat.

Matt,

Many camera companies have cameras suited for higher temps. Adding shade or housings with shade and or cooling may be required. Bosch by example can handle temps to 140F.

I see installs with camera housings with two sun shades to help with the temps seen in AZ / NV.

Good luck,

Matt,

I agree with Dave F.  We've had good luck with a number of Bosch installs in some full exposure locations in So. Cal. with the right housings which included sunshades/blowers.

Another alternative is Mobotix.  These are completely self-contained units that are incredibly robust, operate on minimal power and require no special housings, blower, etc.  They just work and keep on working.

Typically I see vandal domes fail in hot environments when mounted to the wall instead of using a wall mount bracket that keeps the camera horizontal, regardless of brand.

I'm pushing for sun shades if they wall mount them.  Also made the suggestion that they mount on brackets to get the cam vertical.

The Hikvision model we are considering can handle up to 140 Degrees F as well.

Thank you for the feedback.
