What Ever Happened to VitaminD?

One of the few new entrants to the video analytics market in the past few years, VitaminD attracted a fair amount of interest for their low cost, integrated video analytics / VMS offering. However, since then, the company has not released any news nor major new product versions. While our test of VitaminD showed common analytic performance problems, for its price and market positioning, it held promise.

According to VitaminD executives, the company was quietly dissolved in late 2010 due to lack of funding. Former employees "bought the assets from Vitamin D, Inc. (including the app & website), formed a LLC and have been maintaining & supporting the product, and operating the website." A few minor features and bug fixes have been released but no major new features.

VitaminD says they are open to selling the application/technology. We still think it has some potential as we hear smaller integrators and end users mention it every few weeks. Plus, since it has a direct sales / e-commerce setup already in place, with a boost in marketing, ramping up sales might be relatively easy. Adding a managed video / cloud interface to this might make for an interesting approach to the market in 2012 / 2013.

On the one hand, the computing load required for analytics and the potential performance problems are barriers that may require significant additional investment. On the other hand, the rapid growth in IP cameras and consumer surveillance over the last 2 to 3 years may provide the foundation for increased market acceptance.
