Verkada Gave Various Employees Access To Any Camera Without Telling Customers
Various employees across Verkada used 'Super Admin' privileges to view any customer's camera footage at any time, unbeknownst to said customers, IPVM can reveal, based both on the hacker's confirmation and an interview with an individual with direct knowledge of the practice.
This news comes after Verkada was hacked, exposing camera feeds for all of its ~150,000 cameras including those at Tesla, Cloudflare, and many other companies.
In this post, IPVM explores Verkada's 'Super Admin' function and what it says about the company's privacy and security policies.
Hacker Exposes Super Admin Capability
After Bloomberg broke news of the hack, one of the hackers, Tillie Kottmann, tweeted that "various employees" within Verkada had accounts which were "priviledged enough" to view the "camera of any customer":
Not only did Super Admin provide access to video feeds, as the screenshot above shows, it provided access to the root shell inside the cameras running inside each customer's facility.
Kottman confirmed this to IPVM, stating they had impersonated an employee with Super Admin capabilities. Kottman also tweeted that Super Admin actions had poor oversight, stating they used the function for "two days" while using obviously fake terms like "APT-69420":
Kottman's implication above is that Verkada was not properly monitoring or being alerted to misuses of these Super Admin actions or else they would have been detected.
Hours after these tweets, Kottman's account was suspended for "distribution of hacked material", per Bloomberg reporter William Turton:
Entire Teams Used Super Admin, Says Source
A source with direct knowledge of the matter told IPVM that Verkada's Product and Engineering teams, along with company executives, had Super Admin privileges, allowing unrestricted access to any customer video surveillance footage; these employees regularly viewed this footage for debugging and product improvement purposes but did not disclose this to customers:
The purpose was to be able to debug issues. But customers didn't know and it was known at the company not to tell customers that. No customer directly asked since any sane person would never expect a vendor to be able to do this so broadly across teams.
The source added that Sales did not have Super Admin capabilities. However, as IPVM reported last year, some Sales employees did have access to Verkada's own video surveillance system, abusing it to make sexist jokes about female colleagues.
"Leadership At Verkada Give Zero Shits About Security"
The source criticized Verkada's leadership, specifically co-founder Hans Roberston, for leading to this situation:

Verkada Response
We previewed these findings with Verkada, which responded with the same general statement they have provided to various publications:
We have disabled all internal administrator accounts to prevent any unauthorized access. Our internal security team and external security firm are investigating the scale and scope of this issue, and we have notified law enforcement.
A source close to the company added that "Every login and action, including those by internal admin accounts, are logged" by Verkada and these "are being reviewed as part of this investigation." We believe this as Kottman's findings match up with that.
Verkada will still need to answer why such broad internal admin access was provided and why no alerts were generated before the hacker / Bloomberg notified Verkada.
Verkada On Privacy
On Verkada's website, CEO Filip Kaliszan says that Verkada products are "built to prioritize privacy", even criticizing companies who are "disingenuous" about privacy:
All of Verkada’s products, beginning with our cameras, are built to prioritize people’s privacy. And while any data company will tell you the data they create or store is secure, that’s not always the case. Some of these companies are being disingenuous; others simply fail in their product design. But our commitment to privacy is real: privacy constitutes the foundation of our work, it is integral to our business model, and it underlies everything we do. And we are confident that we have built products that live up to our values [emphasis added]
Clearly, allowing so many employees to covertly view customer video surveillance streams prioritizes neither privacy nor security.
UPDATE: Bloomberg Reports
Bloomberg has published a new report on this topic, corroborating our reporting and sharing more details, troubling from a cybersecurity perspective:
- "More than 100 employees at security camera startup Verkada Inc. could peer through the cameras of its thousands of customers"
- “Nobody cared about checking the logs. You could put whatever you wanted in that note; you could even just enter a single space.”
- "We literally had 20-year-old interns that had access to over 100,000 cameras and could view all of their feeds globally"
- Although using a Super Admin account normally required multi-factor authentication, any user could simply switch it off, one of the former employees said.
UPDATE: Verkada Admits
10/12: Verkada has a new security update where they partially defended their accessing customer video without authorization, saying:
We have always aimed to strike the right balance between ensuring full control for our customers and maintaining just enough access to provide the best product and customer support.
The issue is not Verkada accessing customer video, it is doing so without customer authorization.
Verkada cited some steps they plan to take to rectify this secret access problem:
we will ensure that customers receive proactive notifications whenever their data is accessed by Verkada, including by our technical staff.
