Spectron IR Thermal Fever Screening System Examined

By Ethan Ace, Published Apr 14, 2020, 10:28am EDT (Info+)

Most are quick to avoid "fever screening" and "medical" labels, but Oregon-based Spectron IR, with 10+ years of thermal medical imaging history, is embracing them.

We spoke to Spectron IR and in this report, we look at their medical IR imaging systems, how they compare to others, and their potential outlook.

This looks like an amazing solution, at that price point, it's hard to justify. If I can put a FLIR A400 with 6° lens for $12k. I do appreciate that they were here before the push of all fever detection.

Based upon the claims made, the FDA accreditation and the track record of having been in business, specifically in this field, for a while I have to assume that these guys are credible.

Of course just because you can a do thing does not ever mean that you should do a thing and I tend to be of the belief that this current interest in temperature screening will be of a relatively short duration. Especially given the disappointments that will surely arise when claims made in advertising literature by some of the new entrants cannot be met in the field. Systems such as this moreover do not answer the question of what to do about the majority of individuals who are either asymptomatic or only exhibit very mild symptoms? How does anyone envisage detecting them?

I completely agree. Additionally, what is to stop someone from taking an aspirin and fooling the system? Unfortunately, I don't believe taking an employees temperature will do little to mitigate the spread of the virus or any other sickness.

Update: Spectron IR reached out to us with updated, lower pricing. They say that due to the ability to purchase components in greater volume, they were able to reduce costs.

System prices have gone down ~25%, now $24,500 USD for the entry level system to $32,500 for the motorized cart (previously ~$32,000-40,000).
