On-Board Storage Usage Statistics 2017

By: Brian Karas, Published on May 03, 2017

SD card slots are now commonplace on IP cameras, but is on-board storage usage now common place?

In 2014, integrators reported using edge recording on just 7% of the cameras they deployed. New responses from 140 integrators provide fresh data for on board recording usage, which we detail in this report.

Does anyone have first hand experience on how many times a class 10 SD card can be written over before failure?

I've heard a specific camera manufacturer claim 10,000 - though I've yet to see this in print from Sandisk

I would post a screen shot but I cant for some reason, though i generally get about 1-2 years with out side cameras and a little over 2 with indoor climate controlled ones

Thanks Eddie - is that in a continuous record mode, record on motion only or as redundant / back up only?

It used to be easier to find data sheets on the SanDisk cards. The High Endurance cards are rated for up to 10,000 hours of video recording (which is different than re-writes).

That spec seems to be based on the card rating of 192 TBW (tera-bytes written).

For a 64GB card that implies a total of ~3,000 re-writes (192TB = 192,000GB. 192,000/64 = 3,000)

yes yes and yes

Also I have used the Raid 1 function as well

Now it wants to work

I use SAN disk Kingston, Samsung and GSkill memory cards

SDcard

Still works with not issue Ill let you know when it fails. about 1.5 years old san Disk

I'm sure B Karas has more empirical data from SD manufacturers but everything I've heard and read indicates SD (even high endurance) is not designed for the rigors of "eat the tail" cyclical recording demanded by video surveillance. Alternately, SSD is much more suitable for cyclical overwriting without the spinning disk point of failure.

Data sheets indicate writing alarm events to SD. I don't understand the benefit.

SD appears to be suitable for network fault tolerance (write to SD on network connectivity loss to server) but not a whole lot more.

Gday All,

I think I should suggest that peers look at exacqVision EDGE .... its precedes 2014 and provides a full customisable balance between centralised and de-centralised topography for video systems.

I've had to deal with competing manufacturers and integrators claiming they can do same. Zzzzzzt you cant.
