Milestone Denies Dahua "Joint Value Proposition"

By John Honovich, Published Nov 11, 2020, 10:44am EST (Info+)

Just days after Dahua's racist Uyghur tracking was revealed, Dahua ran marketing touting a 'joint value proposition' with Milestone. Milestone has denied this, emphasizing that it was not a part of this and does not approve it.

Inside this note, we examine Dahua's marketing campaign and Milestone's denial.

There are a lot of plugins shown in the document. Who made the plugins? Did Milestone validate/test them? Usually a VMS is part of an ecosystem/technology partnership program to gain access to their API to be able to write integrations to the cameras from the VMS, as opposed to the cameras simply being ONVIF or Dahua API compliant and then hoping that it works.

I understand that Milestone may be trying to be careful and distance themselves, but they are partners and list Dahua on their marketplace, etc...

Good questions. I just checked the Milestone marketplace and pulled up the plugin for the fever camera that is laughably using Dahua's original faked marketing:

Milestone 'verified' this plugin, see excerpt below:

I've mentioned this before that this whole looking at another company's setup and 'verifying' something is risky as that's a pretty low level of verifying, i.e., instead of setting it up yourself and actually understand how it performs and what issues it might have.

but they are partners and list Dahua on their marketplace

And that is fair, it's not as if Milestone blocks Dahua. On the other hand, companies cannot unilaterally use others in marketing, e.g., hypothetically Avigilon doing a 'joint value proposition' with Milestone, etc.

Milestone Marketplace also has a "Milestone verified" Hikvision facial recognition plugin, last updated Nov 3, 2020:

Interesting to see that this has persisted despite Hikvision's human rights sanctions & Uyghur detecting AI camera.
