A former associate editor of The New York Times Upfront magazine, Carl has been on the staff of the New York Daily News, the Home News Tribune, the Courier News, and The Marshall Project.

Managing Editor at IPVM

Carl earned an MS with honors from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and holds a BA in Communication with a Journalism concentration from Kean University.

As IPVM's first Managing Editor, Carl will oversee IPVM's rapidly growing News department, leading investigations into key industry topics such as secretly rigged fever cameras, sexual harassment and poor cybersecurity at the US' most prominent video surveillance startup, and human rights abuses against Uyghurs by PRC/China manufacturers.

Former Correctional Officer With Academic Experience

Prior to entering journalism, Carl served as a correctional officer. Firsthand experience in the security industry provides important perspective for reporting and understanding subscribers' needs and interests.

Additionally, Carl has taught at Kean University, where he is an adjunct professor in the Communication Department, since 2017. Throughout his academic career he has taught journalism to hundreds of students.

Both experiences, coupled with his editor background, will help Carl serve as a leader and mentor for the reporting team. His addition to IPVM is a significant step forward in enhancing the volume and reach of our reporting.

Making An Impact

IPVM is a mission-driven organization, dedicated to independent and objective information. IPVM's history of impact was an important part of Carl's decision to join:

In IPVM, I saw a growing publication making a tangible impact. I am excited to step into this role and help realize the vision John Honovich has for IPVM in the future and I'm honored to be a part of the IPVM team.

The team is excited to have a longtime investigative reporter/editor and journalism professor to help bolster IPVM's hard-hitting coverage even further.

Expansion Of Reporting

With Carl and our ongoing expansion, readers will see IPVM:

  • Pursue more in-depth reporting and investigations
  • Expand to adjacent areas to video surveillance
  • Publish a greater number of reports each week

Meet The Managing Editor

IPVM will host a webinar on September 15th at 12pmET where subscribers can meet Carl and ask him questions about his background and plans for IPVM's future coverage.

Welcome Carl!

Was this actually your first edited article, or did you recuse yourself because of your relationship with the subject?
