By John Honovich, Published Jan 19, 2015, 12:00am EST

140 video surveillance professionals, including integrators and manufacturers, shared the largest video surveillance projects that they have seen in the past year.

Key Patterns

The survey results revealed a number of key patterns, including:

  • City surveillance, retail and transit were, by far, the top verticals for the biggest projects.
  • North America lagged in mega city surveillance projects but lead in mega retail ones.
  • The median largest project for integrators was ~250 cameras

Color Commentary

Professionals shared more than 100 specific examples of large projects, such as:

"A 2000 Camera deployment for the Egyptian Metro (47 stations). The project had Cameras, VMS, Video Analytics, Access Control integration, UPSes (40min backup time), Fiber, ~ 3.5 miles Trenching, Switches. The project was won with Axis & Aimetis for about $5.2 million. The competition was Hikvision. Axis cameras were cheaper than Hikvision"

BIGGEST

The biggest projects were in the 10,000+ camera range:

  • "City Surveillance in Asia some more than 100K cameras."
  • "Moscow district video surveillance project. 1st phase of the project integrates 10,000 already installed cameras in 76 towns of whole district. During next few years project will grow to around 100k cameras."
  • "44,000 channels. Mexico. Retail. Around $500/channel."
  • "We have installed 25,000 camera network in an Asian country in the public security vertical."
  • "Public Safety, Mexico, +10,000 cameras, outsourced VSaaS to be provided to a Mexico State, total +USD$500 million over the next 5 years."

Integrator Largest Projects

For their own business, integrators cited largest projects ranging from 20 cameras to 6,000 cameras. The median number was 250 and the mean was 720, reflecting that a small number of integrators having projects with multiple thousands of cameras. That noted, this reflects that the largest project of a 'typical' integrator is generally in the 100 - 300 camera range.
