This report breaks down how many people read IP Video Market in 2011, where they come from and how this has changed since last year. We had strong growth in readership and continue our expansion as the world's most influential and well read surveillance resource.

Total Readership

Here's an overview of our total readership for the last 30 days:

Key data points to note:

  • Over 56,000 visitors in the past month, an increase of 30% over the same period last year when we had ~43,000 visitors. Compare to 2010 reader stats.
  • The increase was driven by our increased readership of our shootouts and survey reports while the total number of posts were roughly the same over the last 2 years.
  • Direct traffic grew 36% while search engine traffic lagged, only growing 25%.

Strong Direct Traffic

Over 60% of our visitors (34,100) came directly to our site without being referred by search engines or other sites. This is an extremely high number for the security market both in terms of percentages and absolute numbers. The overwhelming majority of visitors to most security sites are from search engines. By contrast, search only represents 30% of our traffic. The number of direct visitors is a strong indicator of the overall interest and influence in our unique original reporting.

Social Media Traffic Growing

While social media still only represents less than 5% of our traffic, social media monthly traffic tripled year over year growing from ~600 visitors to nearly 2000. I believe that connecting our Twitter and LinkedIn accounts helped increase traffic. Social media appears to be most helpful in keeping our most passionate readers in touch with new information.

Geographic Diversity Continues

Just like last year, traffic from the US remains about 40% of total visitors. The global reach of the site remains steady, in contrast to trade magazines whose readership tends to be concentrated in one region.
