Huawei HiSilicon Production Shut Down

By Isabella Cheng, Published on Sep 17, 2020

Huawei HiSilicon chips are no longer being manufactured or supplied to HiSilicon by its manufacturing foundry partners as of September 15, 2020, multiple China sources confirm.

Huawei Hisilicon is the most widely used SoC (System on a chip) in video surveillance products, including for most China-made products. While Hisilicon usage has already been undercut by the NDAA (see IPVM's NDAA whitelist), separate US government action has now shut down Huawei Hisilicon chip production entirely.

In this post, we examine the impact of this shut down, why it is unlikely to be immediately disruptive, and what the longer-term ramifications may be.
