Faulty Hikvision Cali Colombia Fever Camera Implementation

By Robert Wren Gordon, Published Jul 20, 2020, 11:56am EDT (Info+)

The mayor of one of Colombia's largest cities has promoted a faulty Hikvision 'fever' camera setup in local bus stations that violates various international fever scanning standards and exposes the public to health risks.

IPVM obtained and reviewed video from one of the bus stations to directly verify key problems.

This is the third in a series of posts covering faulty 'fever' camera setups in Latin America, including Colombia's President Promotes Bad Hikvision Fever Camera Setup and Dahua Buenos Aires Bus Screening Violates IEC Standards and Dahua's Own Instructions.

The Hikvision sales person who orchestrated this deal is most likely going to have to go back and try and put things right. In other words, they will be Going Back To Cali.

Thank you for reading the post as well as for the very astute comment! 😂 I’m willing to bet Colombia didn't cross LL Cool J’s mind when he did that song.

It's still early in the fever camera gold rush and the industry desperately needs to be cleaned up. It's looking more and more like the used car business everyday.

Just last week, I scrolled across a social media ad for a sign & graphics company that is suddenly a fever camera dealer. They're now offering printed materials, vinyl wraps, magnetic signs, banners, etc., and now fever cameras kiosks.

I thought #2 was kidding, evidently, the joke is on me:

Last week I posted in the comments of their boosted/sponsored Facebook advertisement for this kiosk questioning FDA approval and they quickly deleted it. I guess they didn't know how to handle the question.

Well, I guess at least they have the two big monitors showing the cool looking thermal video while they wait for the bus =|

On social media, I saw one person wrote that the city could have bought a new bus to alleviate congestion on buses instead of getting 65 ‘fever’ cameras.

What is even the point of the public view monitors? (Also used in the Hikvision Palmira example.)

At some level, it seems more about showing off than about implementing a real, meaningful solution.

Thank you Robert for the detailed information. Again, the lack of knowledge and the thirst for money shows the mediocrity of the authorities who only want to appea cutting the inauguration tape.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Juan! I really am looking forward to calling out more stories like this and to working with civil society groups like Fundación Karisma and Dejusticia to profile similarly flawed deployments such as the one in Buenos Aires. As others have mentioned, the money could have been better spent on buses or in hospitals!

I just updated this post to include a detailed response from Bogotá-based civil society organization Fundación Karisma as well as to reflect that a Hikvision spokesperson declined to respond to our request for comment.
