Hanwha Launches Wave VMS

Published Sep 27, 2017 13:57 PM

Hanwha Techwin has been teasing the launch of a new VMS:

But what is it? Did they develop their own or? And how will this impact their competitive positioning, given that Hanwha is historically been an 'independent' camera company with minimal recorder offerings.

Inside, we examine Hanwha's new Wave VMS, its competitive positioning and impact on rivals.

"but they also risk alienating some of their VMS partners who will, at least to some degree, worry about the competitive impact of Hanwha favoring their own VMS over partner VMSes"

I'm convinced that this is in part a response to Tyco using Exacq's popularity to push their mediocre Illustra cameras.

That's a good point. I don't know Hanwha's motivation on that point but I definitely agree with you that Tyco has been pushing Illustra cameras with Exacq.

Btw, how dare you to refer to a Dahua OEM, like Illustra, as 'mediocre'...

Mediocre + Overpriced = Status Quo for Tyco.

Great move for Hanwha.  Any ideas if they are going to have limitations for channel counts to keep this more smaller projects?  With this integrate with there 1080P HD DVRs?

I asked the same question.  Doesn't seem to be a done deal yet, but they are looking at it.

No imposed limitations, outside of any limitations inherent to NxWitness itself in terms of channel counts. Support for Hanwha DVRs should also be in the released version.

This will take wind out of Hanwha’s sail, they are no longer a viable partner for us.

Why is that? Are you a VMS or hardware?

VMS.  They now fail the mutualism test for us.

How many camera manufacturers left that don't fail your mutualism test?

I think with this attitude you're setting yourself up for failure. This was the attitude Toys R' Us took when Amazon opened up a wider market and wouldn't do what Toys R' Us wanted them to. They could have dominated but they rolled over and failed.

Manufacturers need to stop being afraid of competition, embrace it and push forward or risk total failure.

UM#4, curious to get your perspective. Which of the following camera manufacturers would pass the mutualism test:

- Hikvision

- Dahua

- Axis

- Avigilon

- Hanwha

- Sony

- Panasonic

- Bosch

- Pelco

Update - Added a section covering regions of availability:

US, UK First Markets

Wave will initially be available in Hanwha's US and UK markets. The company is evaluating bringing the offering to other markets, based on feedback from dealers and customers. The arrangement does not restrict where Hanwha can offer Wave.

Axis has SMB and NVR hardware and owned by same company that owns Milestone, Panasonic bought Video Insight, Bosch\Pelco has a full end2end solution that you often see, Hikvision pushes their own VMS.. All of these hardware manufacturers are still an important part of top VMS company business.

Were selling quite a bit of spectrum right now. I’ve always disliked purchasing through DW. DWs hardware line and sales/tech support isn’t great. Not terrible but they’re just mediocre at best. I have almost zero experience with Hanwha but I’m excited for this. Even if Hanwha doesn’t offer better support I’d move to offer their version just to get away from DW branding and if their camera line is decent maybe we sell it. If their DVRs/NVRs integrate that would be huge for us.

DW has failed to excel with NX Witness and offer it to its full potential. I almost always know more about the software than their own sales team. Their blackjack NvR series is laughably over priced and they screwed themselves when they got rid of their doubledown deal.

We will see what happens. End of the day I’d rather by direct from Network Optix. Their team is rock solid and they listen to dealers and end users even when they don’t buy directly from them.

I am excited about the prospect of having the integrated Hanwha analytics being supported. Very strong move IMO.

Hanwha has been talking about various VMS applications writing integration to their NVRs.  They have had some level of integration written to their mobile NVR but no one has stepped up to write or complete the integration to their evolving NVR product line.  This has been discussed for at least three years.  There is often the need to sell a Hanwha solution using their NVR and cameras initially (no software license at all) but we try not to because there is no upgrade path, there is no option to sell a real VMS at some point without throwing out their NVRs. Also, there are now circumstances where we have their AHD DVRs as well.  If Hanwha figures out on their own with NXWitness to have this VMS provide true integration with their existing product line AND then allow the integrator to then bring in other manufacturer cameras, that would be cool/a home run.

I spoke with the regional Hanwha rep a couple of weeks ago at my office. He explained to me that they were already working on integrating every single NVR/DVR they have with NX. This is what makes it so appealing to me.

We are on the same page UD#2, thank you.  A customer that is price sensitive i.e. doesn't have any money, you sell an NVR and IP cameras.  You get the sale, everyone is happy.  Down the road, you could then have the option to upgrade (but actually just add) to Wave and perhaps non Hanwha cameras if applicable.  But, ideally Wave should be free and no licensing to integrate to one of their existing NVRs.

I have to disagree with this last comment. Giving it away for free devalues the product. Discounted maybe. But not free. Personally, I want people to see Wave as having value if its free then it has no value. I've been selling Spectrum for two years now and have seen what a great product it is. I would be willing to pay more for Wave if they do all they promise to do.
