We develop enterprise VMS systems and have almost exclusively moved to the WDP drives. We have put seagate head to head with them and they are almost equal in performance, but we get a much more aggressive price from WD. The industry is still stuck in the SATA age and we are almost exclusively installing 12G SAS. Keep in mind these are in 2U rack servers running hundreds of cameras, so we need the speed. Some VMS systems use a head end live DB and we implement SSD in these cases for insane performance.
Full disclosure, I am a WD employee. WD Gold is going EOL in favor of Ultrastar.
It is the same drive with a different label. I will not offer any opinion on brand A vs brand b as I clearly have a strong bias.
WD respondents overwhelmingly cited using the WD Purple drives, marketed for surveillance...
Integrators highlighted reliability, 5-year warranty and video surveillance specific design as the primary reasons for using Western Digital drives...(Annoying emphasis added).
Yet the Purple (and Red) drives only have 3 yr. warranties.
Seagate's are giving us seek errors from the moment of installation. Further research states this is experienced by many.
I'd love for IPVM to put these to the test since most of the data so far presented has been either marketing speak from manufacturers or anecdotal from integrators.
