...modern adjustable closers typically have multiple screws that tweak timing or free travel when they are tightened or loosened.

A sadistic janitor in our high school was quite the “expert” when it came to adjusting the settings to what could be best described as “accelerated slamming” on the steel doors leading into the school. These doors would be locked promptly at 7:55AM.

Recalcitrant truants and other miscreants wishing to avoid the dreaded “yellow slip”, needed to lay in wait for the occasional egresser to clear the doorway and then fling themselves headlong into the shrinking breach of custodial design, or more dangerously try to catch the edge of the door with ones fingers. Are there any guideline aside from bounce avoidance, that pertain to how fast the door can safely close, to avoid injury? Maybe the ADA?

ADA says if the door has a closer, it needs to take at least 3 seconds to close.

ADA also says interior doors are opened with 5 or less pounds of force.

For doors at accessible, exterior entrances the opening force is not specified in the ADAAG. Please refer to your state building code. I think WA state says exterior doors are opened with 8.5 or less pounds of force.
