Deep Learning Startup Boulder AI DNNCam Wants Your Custom Analytics Jobs

By IPVM Team, Published Sep 07, 2017, 09:37am EDT

Analytics manufacturers frequently turn away custom video analytics requests, as they can be challenging and costly to tackle. A recent startup, Boulder AI, with its DDNCam, is doing the opposite, building its entire business model on tackling these kinds of projects.

UPDATE 2019: Boulder AI has hired ex-Avigilon executive Bryan Schmode and soon plans to pivot.

Boulder AI's founder and CEO, Darren Odom [link no longer available], shared details with IPVM on the company, and why they feel they can solve problems other analytics manufacturers tend to ignore. We analyze their approach, their potential to impact the security industry and concerns in this report.

Ha! They are dreaming with their pricing structure and whole concept...as an integrator, I want an install to be as simple and quick as possible, no strings attached and no marriage to a vendor where I have to rely on them for every step.

That sounds like more of a "trunk slammer" mindset than that of an "integrator"

Just saying.....

This is an interesting, and ambitious, approach. But the niche markets they're targeting are not underserved. Detecting anomalies on a conveyor belt is simply machine vision, good luck displacing Cognex. Fish counting and characterization with video analytics has been done very well for years. Ditto for vehicle counting and traffic pattern analysis. Looks like they've got a solution looking for a problem, and that's a tough place to be. I hope they hit on an application that's a good match for their technology.

I see Boulder AI is now releasing a new camera using the Entropix technology. Are there any other cameras that will be released soon using this technology? I'm curious how much the licensing will be. I've been watching for Entropix to be in a released product and it seems it will be.
