DMP Adds Ring Video Doorbell Integration

Published Apr 24, 2018 14:21 PM

Video doorbells have become one of the hottest items for security systems. After several years with no doorbell, DMP has announced integration with one of the leading brands, Ring's Video Doorbells.

With this move, DMP becomes one of the first alarm manufacturers to integrate Ring. But what happened to the DMP Video Doorbell announced in May 2017? Moreover, just how 'integrated' is Ring, and is this the doorbell DMP customers are wanting?

In this note, we will examine the announcement and its impact on DMP's competitiveness.

They're still working on their own doorbell, in their Owners Forum this year prior to ISC West they expressed the challenges associated with the processors they were using among other things. They found it was more difficult to build one than they anticipated. DMP is one of the only companies that has and will ever have integration with Ring. This is a huge competitive advantage for us. You can actually learn in other Ring products as well, while they arent supposed to be compatible they are. DMP is working on integrating a full line of Ring video products.

This isn't the direction I would have anticipated but I am happy for it. This is a solid move in the right direction while we wait for their own product to be released. The whole Amazon thing doesn't worry me too much, we're already integrating with Alexa anyways.

Solid move. DMP has been moving toward residential security products lately, and integrating a wildly popular product like the Ring will help their dealers.

Amazon isn't going to be competing with DMP anytime soon. Amazon products are focused on mass market product, while DMP is focused on midscale and high end residential. They simply don't play in the same space, but that doesn't mean that potential DMP customers wouldn't want some of the features that is available to the mass market.

If you can't beat em, join em.

Has anyone tested this DMP+Ring integration?   I'm curious if it's possible to have Ring's motion detection to trigger a notification from DMP platform.

We asked this to DMP, and Ring motion alerts are not supported as inputs into the intrusion system.

Yes. All push notifications are supported. Ringing the doorbell or motion detected. It doesn’t trip the alarm system just push through the the virtual keypad app. You can turn them on and off inside the app.

In the sense that doorbells can be used as an alarm point for the intrusion system, it does not integrate.  Is this incorrect?

If I understand what you are saying, the VK app may push a Ring motion notification alert, but this is separate of any arm/disarm intrusion alarm state.  Is that correct?

The use case:

1. Ring to sense a person at front door.

2. DMP sends a notification to owner's app to alert him.

3. Live view helps to ID the person.

4. Owner can unarm the DMP security system remotely.

Can this be done entirely within DMP eco system?

Yes, if the user is a DMP Virtual Keypad subscriber.

If you’re in the VK app you can use ring and the rest of the system in the same app. Home automation, security, user code changes, access control...everything. There is no additional charge from DMP for the integration. If you have the app even the basic version you get the ring integration which is really nice.

Wouldn't it be so much easier if these doorbells supported ONVIF too? Think of the integration that would allow with all of your existing NVR / DVR's !
