Dell Launches IoT for Surveillance

Published Sep 05, 2018 14:27 PM

Historically, Dell has been a PC and server provider (e.g., "Dude, you're getting a Dell") and widely used for surveillance storage.

However, in 2016, Dell finished acquiring EMC (which included VMware) and is now leveraging those companies to launch a new category of products aimed at video surveillance.

In this report, based on a conversation with Dell, we examine their "IoT Solution for Surveillance" including:

  • What Dell means by "IoT Solution For Surveillance?
  • Who the best and worst target markets are for this
  • How it is being customized / bundled
  • Why this is not a PSIM
  • What impact is this has on existing Dell OEM partners
  • Compared to Pivot3
  • Competing with IT-Centric Manufacturers like HP

Weird partner list. Dell is a huge company with brand recognition and their partners on this in the security market are V5, Pelco and Pixel Velocity? Those 3 companies together don't seem like they'd sell 100 units combined.  Where is Avigilon, the self-proclaimed largest Dell partner in the industry?

The partners on this list are part of the IoT bundles and are the first to build something. V5, Pelco and Pixel Velocity have taken IoT specific Dell products and integrated them into their products. Dell Edge Gateways, VMWare Pulse, etc.  We announced two things, the first is an engineered solution built on Dell EMC and VMWare tech. The second was more broad than just surveillance and was about creating validated bundles for IoT generally to make it easier for our customers and partners to deploy IoT.

I get that, but this didn't just happen overnight, and Dell should supposedly have a lot of partners, right?

The Edge Gateway 5000 that V5 claims to use just looks like a small form factor PC. It's an Intel Atom processor and runs Ubuntu or Win10 IoT. That does not seem like any particularly special or complex unit (in a good way), why couldn't Dell find some partners with better name recognition to do *something* to help prop up this offering? It shouldn't require a ton of R&D and I would think you would be able to find some manufacturers to jump on this for the PR if nothing else.

All fair points and we are working with a number of partners to grow our ecosystem. There is a lot more to come from Dell Technologies for surveillance. I would be happy to have a 1:1 conversation about our plans. Feel free to reach out to me at ken.mills@dell.com

This product seems similar to Viakoo in it’s analysis of the IP network and firmware updating capabilities.  It would be interesting to see this product compared and contrasted with Viakoo.

Where does this leave Pivot 3?  Seems like Dell could smoosh them pretty quickly with this.
