Color Low Light Mega Shootout 2021

By Derek Ward, Published Jun 21, 2021, 10:09am EDT

Low light performance is key in surveillance, but which cameras are best and worst?

IPVM Image

To find out, we shot out 24 cameras from 11 manufacturers, ranging from 1080p to 4K resolution, low cost to high, and several with white light illumination to see how they compared to examine trends in color low light performance in 2021:

In this report we examine:

  • Which camera models perform best and worst at ~0.1 lux, 1 lux, 2 lux, and up?
  • How true are colors in low light?
  • How well do White Light illumination cameras perform?
  • How do cameras handle moving subjects?
  • How do cameras handle ambient back and side lighting in the scene?
  • Are more expensive cameras better?
  • What impact did manufacturer optimizations have on performance?
