Axis HD Analog Encoder Tested

By Ethan Ace, Published Oct 11, 2019, 09:00am EDT

Two years after declaring "Everything is IP", Axis has released their first HD analog encoder, the P7304, with support for AHD, CVI, TVI, and SD cameras, Zipstream H.265, analytics support, and more.

We bought and tested the P7304 to see how it performed testing:

  • How well do AHD, CVI, and TVI cameras, from Dahua, Hanwha and Hikvision work with the encoder?
  • How does camera connectivity work? What manual steps are involved?
  • How well do various resolutions (VGA, 1080p, 4MP, 8K) work?
  • How does up the coax control work?
  • How does smart codec bandwidth compare to others?
  • How does it compare to Dahua and Hikvision HD DVRs used as encoders?

Thanks, had this on my radar.

Could you test with a HCV-6080R or any other AHD/CVI/TVI motorized varifocals please? Curious how compatible it may be with remote focus.

It’s not compatible with any remote focus today. There’s no option for up the coax control at all. I’ll check with Axis to see if they have a date when they think this might be added.

Yeah, just rethought that. That would be likely be an "up the coax control" function.

The Hanwha 1/4/16 channel encoders support up the coax and remote focus, etc...

AND the Hanwha encoders support TVI and CVI to boot.

The Hanwha SPE-410 and SPE-1610 already support coax control as well as 4MP AHD signal for your Hanwha camera you mentioned.

Do you know which VMS can fully support remove focus through their own software?

Have you heard if Axis is going to release a P7308 or P7316 (8 and 16 channel) version of this?

8/16 version would be nice.

"Two years after declaring "Everything is IP", Axis has released their first HD analog encoder,"

If it ain't IP, convert it to IP... Sounds like Axis is holding true to their words.

Right, like the claim H.265 is a gimmick and will never be adopted as a standard.

Sure, but I think the above is a bit of a stretch even from that old internal article!

perhaps UM3’s statement contained a bit of hyperbole as well. regardless, Axis has repeatedly FUDdied the waters in regards to h.265, as they played catch-up.

What are the advantages to use a encoder these days? Better you can use an Hybrid NVR that support both technologies and you're done.

Some users want to separate the encoding from the recording, e.g., to use specific VMSes that do not offer integrated encoding / recording, e.g., Genetec or Milestone.

If Hik or Dahua is banned from a project, this would be another reason, unless there are other brand NVR's. I guess you could use Hanwha. I personally would love to see an American made HD-Analog NVR. Does anyone know if DW is OEM of Hik or Dahua?

DW uses a mix of Korean and China products but not Dahua or Hikvision, to my knowledge.

What we need is an encoder that supports up to 5MP (TVI). The only one I can find is the Geovision one and its being severely effected by the chip shortage. 1080p for analog is old news. Get with the times Axis.

That won’t happen, not from Axis.

Your best analog HD encoder solution right now is Hanwha, who is soon to release a new NDAA-compliant encoder. Everyone else, yeah, you’re going to see supply issues and more than anything else, compatibility problems.

It makes sense for Hanwha to do it since they still offer quite a few analog camera models. Axis has no motivation to release a better encoder, they'd prefer you buy a better camera (theirs).
