Allegion NDE Wireless Lock Profile

Author: Brian Rhodes, Published on Sep 29, 2016

While wireless locks are one of the hottest areas of access control, two of its biggest challenges are high cost and limited integration with mainstream access control platforms.

Allegion's newest wifi lock line, Schalge NDE has addressed those two issues, with significantly lower pricing and expanding mainstream support.

As a result, many users are considering networked access controls on doors previously too costly to fit. However, despite the inexpensive price and growing support, Allegion's NDE has some big weaknesses.

Inside, we examine NDE, who supports it, and its strengths and weaknesses.

I have had one on my office door since early release of the product over 16 months ago. It is a stand-alone installation and is not integrated with any ACP.

My Experience:

Looks cool.

Big plus that it does not damage door prep with new holes, therefore can be removed and replaced with standard lockset without much trouble.

Programming/configuration was challenging primarily due to finicky wireless connection. Lock did not seem to "take" changes consistently.

Battery power lasted less than 12 months

Limited functionality (as stated in article) and no real audit trail. This may be a function of my unit's firmware.

Product has promise, in my opinion.

We have now installed four doors with these, integrated with the Open Options software and the gateway. Prior to the installation we ran these units here on our bench, and had one that was bad out of the box, which Allegion replaced quickly with no issues.

Our installation team reports that, since they've got the first installation under their belts, that they think you could install four of these before lunch time. They really are quick once you have just a little bit of experience with them.

These have been up and running at the customer site now for about 3-4 months; we've had zero issues or complaints.

I think that this is going to be a good product for us and will help to secure more doors in a given space than what we've typically done.

Greg

We are wrapping up our first NDE project this week. The project is for 5 schools with about 200 NDE locks. The locks are for the schools classrooms /offices. The system is an online system that is integrated with Sielox.

This was the first phase of the project and over time additional doors and schools will be completed When additional funding is available and the NDE mortise locks become available in 2017.

In addition we will be starting another project for another school district which will be about 130 NDE locks and 57 hardwired doors. All exterior doors will have door status and local sounder / strobe in the event of an in athorized exit or entry. The front end will be Sielox and we will also be installing CLASS by Sielox.

for us these products have been a game changer and both Allegion and Sielox have been excellent business partners.
