Can you give us more on real networks?

Try it for yourself.  Now with less spyware, nag screens, and ads.

I can't believe this is still a thing.

Hey UI #2, I've put in a link to our previous coverage of Real Networks' SAFR face rec solution. You can see that story here.

Sorry, Dan. I mistook UE #1's comment as sarcasm. I did not realize it was a legitimate inquiry into RealNetworks security product.

looks like Speco updated their promo with some local late-night camera work:

Trademark Speco Smooth Blurring.

It’s impressive, but I’d like to see some shots at at 3:00 AM to be sure ;)

sorry if it wasn’t clear that I was joking.

I used that picture because

1) it’s Vegas

2) the time lapse reminds of Speco’s slow shutter and resultant motion blur

3) it illustrates that the time of day is irrelevant

Request to IPVM:

Can you provide any data back on the following from Avigilon?

H5A cameras - what they look like, what models they have planned, if they will be more costly than H4A, and if they will completely replace the H4A line.

ACC7 - Is there any grandfathering in of recently purchased licenses. What features beyond focus of attention will be released with it? Right now it just appears to be improved licensing and focus of attention is available in ACC 6.14 as a beta feature.

Analytics - any new features beyond Unusual Motion Detection and appearance search? They have to be making use of some of the new H5A analytics capabilities somehow.

As noted in the report, the H5A cameras will have the same external form factor size as the H4A cameras, with new internal hardware. When I asked them about pricing, they aren't announcing it yet, but said that pricing would be similar to H4A, not significantly more expensive.

Avigilon said there is a 6 month grace period for anyone who purchases ACC6 and wants to upgrade to ACC7 when it is released.

They were not live demonstrating specific new analytics features, but mentioned there will be more classifications (e.g. car, truck, suv), the cameras are capable of tracking significantly more objects at the same time (said up to 4x more objects depending on the scene), and they are showing clips of location and speed based behavior modeling alerts.

Hi Sean, is there any chance that ACC7 will have an OS X / Linux client. The web client with ACC6 isn't cutting it.

Hi Sean, is there any chance that ACC7 will have an OS X / Linux client. The web client with ACC6 isn't cutting it.

This is pretty unlikely.  You're not the only person in the same boat.  However, as popular as Apple has become in the last decade OS X is still a small portion of the market and the even portion of that market that uses ACC is even smaller.

This is the 1st ISCW I've skipped in over 10 years & I'm not missing it at all because I'm confident the reporting here will be thorough.  I remember over the years reading IPVM day recaps from my hotel room at night so that I could consume as much information as possible while engaging with new customers during the day.

Registration day1 did not open until precisely 0730 with the Self registration not opening till much later like 0800.  At the main registration area they were not handing out the coveted IPVM show bags, they only appear to be at some of the Kiosk locations.

To clarity I asked for an IPVM bag and the customer service person did not know what I was talking about and directed me to the floor.

are (some) companies still persisting in their exploitative use of skimpily clad seductive show models, aka “booth babes” ?

if so, has anyone created a list (or floormap) of the booths at which the most outrageous and glaring examples of this egregious practice can be easily found?

stopping by each of these dubious vendors and pointedly (but discreetly) indicating your frank assessment of their continued use of this tawdry relic of a bygone era, might have an a impact on the direction they take in future shows.

obviously it might be difficult to make to all those booths, but everyone should consider using at least their “free” time in this manner, imho.

Love to read your take on LenelS2, who their looking to appeal to, go toe-to-toe with and who you think has a stronger offering.

So much mystery around what this will look like...reminds me of that “Gabo” episode of the Simpsons.

Much of LenelS2's Twitter promotion surrounding Day 1 has been related to incorporating OnGuard into S2's platform, like this 'See OnGuard in Magic Monitor' tweet:

No way this was John’s idea. He’s openly opposed to sales and marketing tactics (and people). Which one of you IPVM staffers came up with this good idea and how did you convince him to capitulate? Question two, where was your reasonable input when he decided to screw up the logo?

Truth be told, I actually thought the bags were a nuts idea at the time (last year). I’m sold on it now.

And: I like the logo. It’s close to what I preferred when we picked the original one. I’m so happy to finally be gradient free.

What I’m sayin is, we are all about defying expectations over here.

No new material for day 2, this looks like day 1’s report retitled

Would love to see a report dedicated to those companies that won product showcase awards at the show.

Two of the things I saw and think is a game changer in the field of security robotics is Cobalts door integration. That a robot on security patrol can open doors with access control without human intervention is amazing.  Similarly Drone core showing a drone that can operate persistently untethered over a target area through an automated hot swap of batteries.  Wow!

Lots of fence and gate companies, one that stood out is RSSI’s vehicle gate operator.  Servo driven so precise control at high speeds.  No more slamming gates into posts and due to speed reducing opportunities for tailgaters. Plus runs on DC voltage like their wedge barriers so it can be backed up using batteries.

In addition to all the booth babes and booze at the show did you see that cable porn over at the life safety booth?  Wowzers...  (FYI cable porn is a beautiful cable installs.  https://www.reddit.com/r/cableporn/   as opposed to Cable gore)

I was at one booth today Vosker and they said they were not allowed to sell product on the floor but then a couple booths down there was this team selling cellphone cases and headphones. ‘Also what’s up with the non security related items like cosmetics, messaging chairs, cellphone cases etc?

Updates:

Reed says that attendance is up 4% (preliminary stats), which would be up ~1,000 vs ~30,000 last year.

The show will be in mid-March next year ( March 17-20). We are not sure what impact that will have. It might be better to have more announcements and meetings earlier in the year. Weather average will be ~5° colder (high average 70° vs 75°) though IPVM team does not go outside during the show at all...

Show mangement commented:

there are always many factors for venue planning – including working around Easter and Passover, total space and meeting rooms availability and more. We’ll always be in the second half of March to first half of April timeframe.

Biggest impact for ISC West going to mid March is hotel rooms could be more expensive on Wednesday and Thursday night due March Madness. Lots of people fly into Vegas for sports betting on Tournament games.

And yes there are a lot clients that need quotes before Q1 ends or quotes refreshed they have been sitting on for 8 months.

One of the oddest marketing gimmicks of the show was Western Digital's roaming WD Purple SD card:

Did anyone from IPVM speak with the SD card?

I suppose the "purple" designation is meant to indicate it is rated for video recording use, which often wears out and kills ordinary cards? But, it would have been nice to let the SD card tell you what specifics, if any, WD is claiming differentiates these from regular SD cards.

i'm so glad someone finally brought up the purple SD card WD mascot....

first of all - to your point - mascots do not speak.  not ever.  it is against the mascot code.

so you'd have to ask the mascot's booth people your questions.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can't believe that someone finally used a mascot at a security show - it is a genius idea.

but just standing there looking purple?  please.

what a waste of $2K on someone who shouldn't ever wear a mascot suit.

mascots should be entertaining - or don't wear the suit, yo.

Whoa. We don't know if "mascot" is the preferred noun here. Perhaps the Purple SD Card self-identifies as a "Character", or even a "Talisman".

Making these kinds of assumptions based solely on appearances, and no attempt to learn more is rather outdated. I'll bet you are in favor of bringing more booth babes back as well.

The mascot was a last minute request from one of our customers, He actually wanted to wear it on the floor so we brought it up from Latin America. It was a bit heavy and hot so we hired a local to wear it anyway. The idea is to remind people that WD (via Sandisk acquisition) is in the card business now and we have surveillance class cards with different work load offerings.

This photo album is going to be GOLD in a couple of years when face recognition algorithms progress a bit more. Great shots of several Hik end-users and integrators. Can't wait to run this against the LinkedIn photo API, get contact info, and see who wants to replace their Chinese cameras as awareness of the risks continues to grow.

Half joking, half serious really. I know the AnyVIsion guys like to do demos by uploading someones LinkedIn profile pic to their database before a meeting, and then doing a live demo where meeting attendees are identified/recognized.

A lot of manufacturers publish selective case studies, but they don't upload their lists of top customers to their site, for good reason. We are only a couple of steps away at this point from these party photo albums effectively being plain-text lists...

The script that U#15 linked to just scrapes websites (using wget, the first version of which was back in 1996) in order to download images. It doesn't run facial recognition on them. Not exactly complicated technology. It's "for future prospecting" (emphasis added).

'HIVIDEO': This did not make the post but we are going to do a test on their product.

The first booth upon entering the China 'pavilion' from the show floor was:

Not only did they rip off Hikvision's wordmark, they trademarked it! Innovation!

And they were showing a facial recognition DVR that was badly broken:

Naturally, we bought one - for $31. Our main interest is to understand more what the super low end is doing, what is being used, how they are attempting to make it work, etc.

They [Costar] told us that Arecont sales had bottomed out in November due to bankruptcy concerns and not knowing what would happen after the acquisition. However, they say Q1 2019 sales have increased significantly

I'd be interested to where the sales increase came from or was about. Did it come from new prospecting, or from them maybe converting some contracts they had for Costar brand products to Arecont line products? If they are just injecting Arecont line products into their current channels and contracts, that not exactly turning a corner for the product. And I'm not saying that Costar is saying Arecont has turned a corner.

But that's what everyone is probably waiting to find out- if this will be a comeback kid or if it will fizzle.
