Milestone Adds Anti-Abuse, Anti-China 'Copenhagen Clause'

Published Feb 26, 2019 19:59 PM

Milestone announced, at its annual MIPS Americas partner conference, the addition of a 'Copenhagen clause' that strengthens their human rights legal terms, countering anti-democractic and misuse of Milestone's software.

This comes just months after Milestone dropped the world's largest camera manufacturer, China-government owned Hikvision, from their Elite Partners, who at last year's event was a prominent participant but had no presence at this year's one.

In this note, we examine:

  • What the Copenhagen Clause Does
  • What it is based on
  • Milestone's Human Rights abuse EULA clause
  • Milestone's explanation to IPVM
  • Milestone encouraging partners
  • How it takes a strong anti-PRC (People's Republic of China) position
  • How this is likely to impact Milestone's Hikvision usage and partnerships

Note: We have a separate post about the Milestone Marketplace announcement. While they were both announced at the same event, we are covering them in separate reports since they are substantially different topics.

I think that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at today's level; which may not be as great as everyone perceives, is 20 levels higher than Milestone perceives. Unless Milestone has some dark technological group kept under the wraps that we do not know about, Milestone is an infant in this technology. Milestone is known as a VMS.

Voice robots (alexa, google, cortana), Cancer Diagnosis (IBM Watson), Facebook, Two Sigma, Alpha Go, Tesla from assisted driving to character(writing) recognition. These are the players in discover and pursuit of this technology. You can add a mile long list of military entities if you like, even Netflix has swag machine learning (how did you think they survived that comet?).

However all I see is a Milestone human rights argument with a Hikvision billboard. I can see this low level controversy stirring the pot here in the small corner of the Merica for Security world. You can find human perspective arguments all over the place, soon you have a thousand here a thousand there. Eventually you have a whole cult following of exactly that, a bunch of people that want to argue. No we did not go to the moon because there is no way to reach orbit off a flat earth? See? If not everyone knows the facts or case then we don't have any facts or case, just another simple argument.

I just do not think this is a big apple discussion with Milestone or Hikvision on the forefront of the technology helping Terra evolve. I just see argumentized news threads snippets fractured from the top down scrolling under the power of my mouse wheel. Is this thread just to keep me informed or involuntarily sway my perception to one paradigm or another? Curious.

Else, I continue to read however I just went to Ranch 99 and got the "I don't know what this is"  food court items. It tastes ok, its pure fat, chewy cartilage and hot peppers sauced up with a vegetable gravy. I still cannot identify the meat, just like I cannot identify which cluster in this news thread is the most efficient means to make a conclusion. Other than my MSG intoxication, I have this compelling notion to hate on Hikvision, at least for now.

I thought it was in Nashville, not New York?

Good for Milestone making a stand about Human Rights Abuse by a manufacture.

Update: Axis says they support the Copenhagen Letter. We asked Axis after we noticed Axis' CEO had signed the Letter and Axis VP Americas spoke positively about the Copenhagen Letter on the MIPS stage. Here is Axis response:

Many ethical questions are complex and we at Axis have had an open and broad discussion around those for years. Two years ago, Axis also decided on an ethical framework regarding the need of balancing the potential of innovation with the need to protect personal integrity. Many of the ethical discussions that we’ve had inside our company - as a basis for both innovation and business - are now becoming a part of a more public debate. The statements in the Copenhagen Letter cover some aspects on ethics that we feel are easy to stand behind. Signing the Copenhagen Letter is a personal statement, and Ray Mauritsson [Axis CEO] signing the letter also reflects Axis position in this matter.

Now, there is a 'Copenhagen Catalog' described as:

The principles were created by hundred and fifty humans in 48 hours at Techfestival in Copenhagen as the next step after The Copenhagen Letter.

Milestone CEO and CTO are signees of the new Catalog.

First principle displayed:

Challenging through democratic institutions and 'blow the whistle' are completely antithetical to the PRC, interesting to see this European led contrast.
