Top Manufacturers Gaining and Losing 2018

Published Nov 26, 2018 12:25 PM

This is the 5th year IPVM has tracked manufacturers gaining and losing:

From 2014 - 2016, IPVM accurately tracked the rise of Chinese manufacturers, led by Hikvision. In 2017, after the Dahua and Hikvision backdoors, results showed the trend stop.

Now, in 2018, with a US / China trade war and the August 2018 US government ban, what would be the impact on manufacturers gaining and losing ground?

manufacturer gains and losses 2018 3

Plus, we examine the top two upwardly trending technologies being sold by integrators.

In this report, we analyze results and patterns across 160+ integrator responses and what this shows about the industry going into 2019.

This is a very good analysis. However, in my country Hikvision has massively taken over the market. You will find Hikvision in retail, Banks, Residential,  Government institution almost everywhere and quite a number of distributors.

The major reason why this is so, is because of the low price and readily availability of the product which gives no alternative choice.

Infact, some client opt to buy the equipment themselves and even if an attempt is made raise a red flag on the vulnerability of the product very little attention is given.

This is a hard nut for me to crack!

Fabian, thanks for sharing your experience in Zambia! I believe it.

Any other manufacturers with significant marketing inside your country? Dahua? Axis? Others?

Same sad trend in my country (Cameroon) with Hikvision. However until now I managed to keep them out of some major bank accounts (not much but respectable wins) by educating the decision makers. I make them focus on the advantages of using an innovative VMS (GENETEC) to centralize their video surveillance and later on to even unify it with their Access control system. VIVOTEK is used for their excellent cameras and support.

In parallel I constantly inform them on Hikvision and others manufacturers vulnerabilities too. By the way I take the occasion to THANK YOU and your TEAM John for the excellent articles which I regularly use to support my points when meeting those leaders.

it is a difficult and long fight, however, serious decision makers with vision, easily understand the different it makes when choosing a solution for long term.

(For info.: First post in this forum since several years of membership 😏)

John, apart from HIKVISION, Dahua and many more un branded model are taking stage.

I had installed PELCO at Urgency and it was replaced with HIK reason being costly and lack of local support in terms of spares. Also, GENETEC with Arecount cameras at some security wing was replaced with HIKVISION reason being costly and unreliability of Arecount cameras.

This industry in my country is actually just coming up and more lessons are required anyway.

If you are not a company who fully engages in cyber security, then you are doing you clients a disservice. This from a government contractor.

The title should say “Losing” not “Lossing”.

Otherwise excellent write-up! Any info on what VMS platforms are gaining/losing traction?

Any info on what VMS platforms are gaining/losing traction?

The only VMS with signs of gaining traction this year was Network Optix (and its OEMs), most noting pricing and performance as the primary drivers:

  • "Network Optix - Good combination of feature set, compatibility and licensing pricing."
  • "Quality VMS- NX Witness. Performance at a very reasonable cost"
  • "DW Spectrum (Network Optix) - Super easy to use, works well, lightning fast searches, no port forwarding required"

Other VMSes (Genetec, Exacq, Milestone, etc) were mentioned, but at similar rates as in the past, with a mix of positive and negative mentions.

Sean - do you think this is a sign that the VMS market is more or less set in place or just not expanding to new integrators?

I ask because it seems as though in our market the battle lines have been drawn.  Some integrators are Avigilon aligned, some are Hikvision/Dahua/whatever is on the endcap at ADI that week, some still push Panasonic/Pelco/Bosch, a very few are Geovision, Milestone is ever-present in schools, and there are a couple Genetec vendors.  While we all cross lines here it's basically fixed borders for the past couple years.

I wonder if the less impact to Dahua has to do with their not being owned by the Chinese government. I know reference was made to their capitalizing on the large project in the Northwest province (can't remember the name). But not being owned by the government may make people less concerned than with HikVision...

Hikvision is huge in Latin America too, just came back from a trip to Mexico and they are everywhere. Like people mentioned here, they win where price is the king and those markets don't care about cyber security yet.

I heard a new term for Dahua/HikVision...

”D*kVision”  (and replace the “*” with the letter “i”)...

That honestly made me LOL at its immaturity and crassness.  How has no one thought of this before!?!?!?

There a few websites due for a change to:

How has no one thought of this before!?!?!?

We. have.  All of us.

Back in 2012, The Very Important Punsters of IPVM, (VIPVM), considered and rejected this portmanteau due to certain irreparable structural flaws which were found.

In layman’s terms, the humor-robbing defect concerns the way the word would be pronounced, i.e. whether the first “i” would have a long or short vowel sound.

If it were to be pronounced with a short vowel, then the new word doesn’t sound similar enough because it’s twice changed, once for the “d” and once for the short “i”, since Hikvision is correctly pronounced HIKEvision.

On the other hand, if the new word uses a long “i“, then this changes the meaning of the joke from just a good-natured and derisively crass put-down to a ribald and misogynistic one.

Therefore, the determination was made that the punmanteau would not gain sufficient traction/acceptance with the the IPVM community at large, and subsequently dropped.

BTW, we don’t deny there is some amount of latent humor in the whole H*k and D*k thingy, we just feel this is not the optimal way to release it.

I had not considered those structural flaws that you so eloquently explained re: "i" having a long or short vowel, nice one.

Please don’t let our criticism discourage you. Also, I highly recommend Brian’s IPVM Pundementals course.  Be warned though, that’s when the criticism really starts :)
