Cloud Video Storage Usage 2018

Published Oct 31, 2018 14:49 PM

Storing email and documents in the cloud have long been common, with on-site email or file servers increasingly eliminated.

However, what about video surveillance? What percentage of new video surveillance deployments are integrators using cloud storage for?

150+ integrators answered this:

Cloud: In the past year what percentage of your new deployments use cloud storage? Why or why not cloud storage?

Their responses were nearly unanimous. In this note, we examine the statistics and the explanations from integrators.

Good article. The cloud is coming. But right now I see the challenges as not just in Internet speeds, but in having common standards, methodology, protocols and having more success stories behind it. Business to business tends to be conservative, and security more-so.

But it will happen sometime soon in the near future, and dealers should need to be ready for it.

What about the application, SQL, and comm servers? Are these often managed in the cloud, with storage kept on site? Or do they tend to stay together?

Tony, when you say application, SQL and comm servers, do you mean those generally or those as elements of a video surveillance or security system? If you mean the later (i.e., security systems), typically those elements are embedded with the overall security system.

The later. As part of an overall VMS.

Leaving the video on-premise while streaming data to cloud servers (for SQL/BigQuery analysis, hooks for notifications/alerts, and application integration) is a great approach. So your point in differentiating between cloud video storage and cloud interop is a great one. (FD I'm with Camio and we focus on that decoupling)
