There's a lot to respect about Genetec, but attempting to put themselves at the center of this conversation as a marketing ploy is not one of them.

Genetec was the first company to take a stand against Hikvision  two years ago, after their now public security flaws were discovered in Genetec lab testing.

I still laugh when I read the Hikvision Response from John's article:

UPDATE: Hikvision Response

Hikvision North America has sent an email special bulletin with the following response:

We have heard that Genetec is now requiring a special license / waiver for customers using Hikvision devices. This is an unfortunate decision for integrators, end-users and Genetec itself. Genetec has not produced any evidence that this decision is based on product technology

Another true irony on the IPVM boards here is the HIK deniers saying there is no risk, when the Chinese Govt. themselves (AKA: HIK Ownership) recognized, published and began blocking competition under the same premise in 2012:

John - You wrote:

It is important to note the irony, if the PRC would have allowed Genetec (whose technology clearly is world class) to win such project, maybe Genetec would have been afraid to take such a strong stand against untrustworthy foreign governments.

That's not a correct assumption. Genetec leadership made the decision long before that not to do business with China due to their long & well documented state sanctioned (state run?)  history of Intellectual Property theft. Their general disregard for Rule of Law and the State Sponsored data thefts at Equifax , Anthem Insurance & The US Office of Personnel Management validate that decision

Disclosure - I work for Genetec
