Debating Relevance of China Hacking US Navy Plans

Published Jun 11, 2018 16:17 PM

"Chinese government hackers have compromised the computers of a Navy contractor, stealing massive amounts of highly sensitive data related to undersea warfare", first reported by the Washington Post.

Is this relevant to the video surveillance industry or not?

Since

1) no mention of Hikvision in the OP

2) only Chinese Government hackers mentioned

3) Hikvision claims to run the company independently of Gov

therefore no one that believes Hik should even care, right?

Hikvision claims to run the company independently of Gov

Hikvision claims many things, some of which, such as their independence from the Chinese government, have been disproven. Several key Hikvision executives are high-ranking Communist party officials as well, making the Chinese government very much integrated into Hikvision (and vice-versa I suppose).

Hikvision claims many things...

The post is sarcastic.  I’ve edited it to make it clearer.

Whenever you point a finger at something, there are usually 3 fingers pointing back at yourself.

Why don't you Americans (I'm Canadian) start a real deep dialogue & disclosure on whether American government hacks other countries?

I'm sure most of you may have heard the quote similar to - "let those without sins, cast the first stone......"

Every country is hacking other countries.    The difference is China has a company pumping out IOT devices and people are installing them thinking it's not a big deal.

Exactly, that is the kind of thing you read about when you have unrestricted press, and from a government that at least on the surface advocates "freedom".

Imagine what is being pumped out of Communist China, where there is no free press and no illusion of freedom or privacy being basic human rights?

No need for a dialogue, I don't think anyone seriously doubts that is happening.

The necessary dialog is "why do we assume Chinese products are safe for use and suitable for sensitive applications?"

Which is why if the CIA ever spun off a camera division nobody would purchase them...

All governments have intelligence services.  Our business is a double edged sword.  I as a free man I want to work with a company I can count on not to sell me something I didn’t know I was buying....ie privacy hack for whatever purpose to steal.

Drop the international politics debate.  Waste of time.

This is absolute crazy that we allowed ourselves to be so careless.   There can be no doubt the Chinese have benefitted militarily from these efforts.  Just look at the J31.  Not only is this plane a mix of the F-35 and the F-22, its an improvement.  They took the plans and improved on them.  They still lack the engine manufacturing prowess perhaps..... but man come on.......

And ultimately who can produce the products?  Do we have the military industrial potential to produce the electronics needed to service our high tech weapons?  China does, perhaps lacking the ability to produce chips as well as we do—for now.

Today not only do we have this disadvantage but it seems we are not strategically aware of the depth of our growing disadvantage, and we continue to lose ground while our leaders proclaim our great dominance and strength.  This is just arrogant stupidity and its a disgrace. Please someone tell me I am just having a breakdown and I am wrong and shut the @##$ up.  Maybe I need my medication lol.

I know I am pissed I cant sell a strong American brand of surveillance.  I’m a small company and I would prefer to use Axis all the time but cant buy containers at a time for good pricing.  So I work with a brand oem’ed that makes a few of its things but buys from Dahua.  Why cant we buy their hardware and use our own firmware??

Seems in a similar situation an American company could not do this effectively and put to market a camera that had firmware created here that simply didn’t work....

Would you settle for a strong Canadian Owned/American Made brand with a slight alphabetical advantage over Axis?
