JCI / Tyco VideoEdge NVR Profile

Published May 03, 2018 14:31 PM

JCI (formerly Tyco) is one of the largest players in the global security industry, both as a manufacturer and an integrator.

The company's most well-known recorder offering is Exacq, acquired in 2013. However, the company owns another one, VideoEdge, acquired years before Exacq.

Yes I just spoke to VideoEdge about that miscommunication, the post has been updated to reflect that.

The Multiple Brand Confusion continues across the Access Control lines, right now JCI's uses the P2000 supports mercury boards. While Software House and Kantech as far as I know make and manufacture their own proprietary boards. Which can not be very cost effective to operate two separate manufacturing plants let alone the research and development for all three softwares. To compete on three fronts for Access Control market share can not very sustainable.

I am sure that there will be merge of P2000 and Ccure from Software House in the future and hopefully they will stop using Mercury boards as I do not trust access control solutions where hardware is produced by different manufacturer than the software part.

We can discuss about the cost and efficiency of separate developments for two brands, Kantech and Software House but I do not see an issue there. Each brand is designed for different market. Ccure is project oriented product and Entrapass solution is ready for distribution business and middle market.

It is like in car business, Porsche and Volkswagen is owned also by the same group, they might have seemingly different developments but in the end they share resources and are able to address broader market.

The car analogy is poor because people aren't choosing between a Porsche and Volkswagen to get from point A to B. No one is going to buy VideoEdge because it is a status symbol, or to keep up with their neighbors, or to rip it around the local track on the weekends.

Where your Porsche/VW analogy makes sense, against your point, is if you're going to keep both, Exacq and VideoEdge should be sharing resources and developed on the same frame, engine, chassis. Which they aren't.

EDIT: I see you're specifically talking about Kantech and SH, not necessarily VE and Exacq, but it appears to be a theme with JCI's product strategy.

I believe that the car analogy works for VE and Exacq as well in the end.

My choice of cars might be wrong though. I should have picked Volkswagen and Skoda. Brands that are not status symbols and get you from point A to B.

In Volkswagen you have different sets of features, cars look different but if you look closer they share many components.

At the same time VE and Exacq they look different but they could use the same components (utilize the same patents, might share resources in camera API testing and other development routines, process that are not visible for outside world)

I can go along with Volkswagen and Skoda for the simple fact that it still makes the point for me. Skoda is an international but limited brand overall, and most of the parts/chassis and development is shared between Skoda/VW/Audi models. It's more or less what we would call an OEM/ODM business model in the security industry (a bit of a stretch to be honest).

The crux of your argument:

At the same time VE and Exacq they look different but they could use the same components (utilize the same patents, might share resources in camera API testing and other development routines, process that are not visible for outside world)

That's the whole point. They don't use the same components, they're developed completely independently, have different capabilities, different integrations to other software platforms from their own parent company.

My opinion.... Tyco needs to drop the Victor/ Video Edge and focus on making Exacq a fuller featured VMS. It has the name recognition and simplicity many like. Keep the Professional version as-is and focus on the Enterprise version of Exacq to have the same fuller features as Victor VideoEdge.

I do not agree, the VideoEdge/Victor is not just a recording platform, it is complete security solution. It targets different level of integrators, it is not just buying a black box and palce it to a rack.

What you are suggesting is to re-brand VideoEdge/Victor into Exacq :-) but with this kind of solutions you cannot expect simplicity of instalations that is required from Exacq and it is the driver of using Exacq (stablity/simplicity/easy and good support)

Let me guess, you work for Tyco? Video Edge is/was already an OEM of Exacq, they just added a layer (Victor). Why manage multiple different VMSs? Have one that scales and can handle small to enterprise projects that has the simplicity and openness of Exacq. As it scales to larger projects you can add to more complex features.

"but with this kind of solutions you cannot expect simplicity of installations that is required from Exacq "

Why not have a powerful simple to use VMS?

"Video Edge is/was already an OEM of Exacq, they just added a layer (Victor). Why manage multiple different VMSs?"

This is not actually correct.  Exacq was an OEM of TYCO prior to its purchase.  Victor was and is the main client for VideoEdge which existed in parallel with exacq.   A convenience feature of the product (victor) is that it can communicate with and present video from multiple Tyco recording platforms including exacq.

Victor can also incorporate HD-Analog through their Holis line recorders, although camera selection for Holis is slim, only 4 different 2MP HDCVI.

The Holis NVR has facilities within native GUI and web setup eluding that they will support PTZ, either through serial port or HDUTC. I really hope AD introduces some more cameras, we have several Victor customers with older Ultra domes that could be easily replaced with HDCVI PTZ when or if offered.

I tried a "generic" HD-Analog PTZ that I got on Ebay, picture worked @ 1080, but couldn't get PTZ controls working. I suspect the firmware is such that only AD cameras will work?
