'Catastrophic Problem' For Videofied App

Published Dec 06, 2017 16:14 PM

Less than 2 months after closing their DIY division DragonFly, Videofied has been hit with a problem the company calls 'catastrophic'. Now the commercial and dealer focused Videofied platform's app [link no longer available] has stopped working, and Honeywell is not sure when it will be fixed.

What does this outage mean for existing Videofied customers, and is this problem so big they should be shopping for other options?

I’m just guessing here. Typical Honeywell buys the thing (in this case, Videofied), then lets go the people who created the thing. Now it’s broken and nobody at Honeywell knows how to fix it. Perhaps an insider can confirm. Whomever coded that thing just became quite valuable!

Well it was just working, so somebody just needs to free up some disk space by clearing /tmp /var/tmp out and then reboot it just for good measure...

I think they tried to clear up disk space by running rm -rf ......

True, usually typical because of US TAX code that allows companies after an acquisition to layoff the employees of the acquired company and spread the cost of doing so over 27 years, but get immediate P&L benefit every quarter thereafter thus satisfying the stock analysts. It's called purchase accounting. Ridiculous this exists.

Second common reason is the acquiring companies CEO missed his quarterly bonus.

Or I have seen the management of the acquiring companies ego with "we can do it better mentality" But never ever the case as I have seen numerous times.

Let’s just hope that Honeywell never buys a self-driving car app and releases it to the public as The Honeywell Auto Liberator 9000 (or HAL 9000)!
