UTC / Lenel Joins FLIR Dropping ASIS

Published Sep 07, 2017 14:29 PM

Weeks before a show, vendors are typically gearing up for their booths.

But UTC / Lenel / Interlogix is joining FLIR in a last minute dumping of their ASIS 2017 booths.

Inside this note, we examine what is happening with these companies, pressure on ASIS and who is stepping in to take their booths.

The new ASIS management team is trying a lot harder than the old one to get exhibitors and to make the show better. They might be able to turn the tide in the next few years, but right now it is hard for them coming off a string of disappointing shows for exhibitors.

The new ASIS management team may or may not have gotten them memo that some of the members of their professional organization would like them to act less like a trade show operator and more like a professional organization.  If you see them as trying harder on the trade show front, then they're screwing up.

I agree with you from the perspective of being an independent professional organization.

However, ASIS' position (historically at least) has been that the sizable profits made from selling booths, sponsorships and advertising is critical to funding other worthwhile things that ASIS does. At least from how we run IPVM, we feel strongly that the tradeoffs of doing this (accepting marketing money) are fundamentally destructive.

I don't know enough about how ASIS membership overall feels but evidently, at least their board of directors of professional security managers are on-board with this, because they presumably would have the power to change?

The current board of directors would appear to be trying to listen to member feedback and they admit things are not perfect on the ASIS party boat...  The HQ staff (who works for the org, which works for the members who write the checks, remember?) is presumably evolving their approach.

You have to pay those executive wages somehow.

I attend ISC and ASIS.  At ASIS my main focus is attending the training sessions and scheduling followup meetings with the companies we are interested in.  It provides an opportunity for my team to attend the meetings with me and see the product in detail. ISC is the place where I walk by every booth and stop to ask questions if I find something interesting. ISC West is very crowded (probably because of Vegas) and not a great place for detailed meetings with vendors.  The training sessions I have attended at ISC have always left me wishing I would have done something else with the time.

Our industry is very big and getting larger.  Its my opinion that there is room for both and I find value in both events.

ASIS should cancel their show out of respect for the disaster in Texas, the hotels are currently full with displaced residents and relief workers. When the show comes to town they will be displaced by the event.

I think Lenel and others may understand that. My whole company has canceled our trip to ASIS for this very reason.

Checking hotels in the area today; while downtown Dallas does not have much availability, there is a ton of choices at very reasonable if not below average prices all around the DFW metro area. I question the claim that residents and relief workers are being displaced by ASIS attendees.

I live in Texas, but admittedly not in the DFW area.  However, I live in Austin, which is about the same distance from the hurricane area, and in my opinion, a whole lot better place to hang out.  We had some refugees, but they have been back in their home areas for a couple of weeks.

We have over the last several years scaled back our presence at this show..It has become more of a regional event and as long as you have these expectations you will most likely have a successful event. We have been displeased for years competing with their education tracks that seem to take attendance from the show floor. I expect if attendance is low this year we will reconsider the size of our footprint for 2018. But one thing that does not change is the yearly increase for space and services.

Rick, this year they are putting some of the education tracks on the show floor as well as requiring keynote attendees to exit onto the show floor. Let's see if it helps exhibitors like yourself.

Not sure what constitutes "last minute" dumping, but it has been known for several months that UTC/Lenel would not be exhibiting on the show floor but would be making use of alternative space for meetings. Additionally, I think this will prove to be a continuing trend with major manufacturers as the real ROI has been the quality of meetings that simply cant happen in the Expo hall, regardless of what makeshift meeting space is provided inside a booth or lounge area.

#3, thanks for the feedback. Booths are typically booked a year in advance and even if they cancelled a few months ago, ASIS booth contract would allow no refund at all:

That's generally why booth cancellations, even months out, are uncommon.

That said, I agree with you about the general trend.
