Fast food restaurants or QSRs (quick service restaurants), are frequent victims of crime and fraud. Because they are open late, deal with cash, and are designed to be exited quickly, they make attractive robbery targets. Because they are often carry extensive insurance policies, they make attractive targets for lawsuits such as slip and falls and workplace injury claims. In this guide, we examine best practices for QSR surveillance, including

  • Camera placement
  • Food preparation areas
  • Offices and safes
  • Stockroom and storage areas
  • Restroom
  • Drive through lane
  • Minimizing camera counts
  • Protecting the recorder
  • Viewing the video

Great Article although in some area's in regards to positioning the camera's I do Not agree.  Unfortunate majority of the camera's are installed to high for a positive identification. the height if the cameras need to be adjusted or a additional camera(s) need to be installed on a shoulder/ head height. Beside this I would advice to install a camera beside the entry/ exit door on a shoulder/ head height for facial identification facing inside. Less issues with back light as we have on our islands in the Caribbean.

In areas where the fault is located I would advice to make use of covert camera's beside the overt camera's as described in this article

Great article. The QSR market is growing segment and there are some good technologies around Que lane metrics, PoS reports and heat mapping.

If I may add, in QSR and retail applications special considerations need to be made in regards to Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, also known as PCI DSS Compliance. I have seen many applications where the NVR violated PCI because it exposed credit card processing to an unsecured part of the network. Because a lot of QSR and retail customers are smaller, mom-pop stores, they do not understand the requirements for PCI, which can result in hefty fines.

Any integrator working in this space should take time to learn and understand PCI DSS to ensure proper installation on the clients network.

I've worked with EZUniverse a bit in this world.  Highly competent, and great technology.  They combine full restaurant controls to look for waste and loss.

I know camera pixels are getting higher at a cheaper cost, but would you still want a camera watching multiple things like the cash drawer, register screen, and customer. Seems you could only adjust visual focus to prioritize one or two things at the most with the cost of the other. Of course most restaurateurs want a camera that can see the  monetary value and serial number of the bills until they get the cost.
