Avigilon Announces New Lowest Cost Camera (Mini Domes)

Published Jun 07, 2017 00:20 AM

Avigilon's first Micro Dome (see IPVM's test) is now 4 years old.

Since that time, low-cost fixed focal Chinese manufacturer dome usage has increasing significantly industry wide.

Now Avigilon has released preliminary details on the Micro Dome's successor, which is positioned to offer a low cost entry level camera that fully integrates with Avigilon's VMS.

COO James Henderson provided additional details on the upcoming Micro Dome replacement, described as a "tool for loyal partners", which we cover in this report.

Why even report on Avigilon? It's a closed system that only select integrators have access to. They don't allow new dealers in most areas so this reporting is irrelevant to most people.  The only use would be competitor knowledge. Can we slow down the Avigilon coverage unless it's some major news?

There is more to AVIGILON than the US only...bit of a one sided remark by the OP. It's also not a 'closed system' but I suppose you he/she wasn't talking about the VMS but the Dealer network.

Closed refers to the dealer network.

From a revenue perspective, Avigilon is fairly large. We covered their quarterly financials recently, as we do for other publicly traded security companies, and also covered the promotion of James Henderson to COO, which signals some significant changes in the company. Around ISC West we covered some of their analytics announcements as well.

One area where Avigilon has been lacking is in low-cost/fixed-lens cameras, which this release addresses. We have not covered other Avigilon announcements, such as their updated PTZ or late-to-market smart CODEC, as these are less significant.

As for being a closed system, this is a common incorrect statement. Avigilon's VMS supports non-Avigilon cameras (primarily through ONVIF), and other than the H4PRO cameras their cameras also feature ONVIF (including this one, I didn't mention it in the report). That being said, I think that Avigilon hardware and software is primarily deployed together, and there are likely very few new deployments with Avigilon cameras and other VMS, or deployments with Avigilon's VMS only and 3rd party cameras (though out of $354M in revenue I'm sure both examples exist).

You are correct that Avigilon limits dealer access.  This has historically been something that Avigilon-certified dealers have seen as a major benefit and non-certified dealers have seen as a terrible approach. But I do not see this alone as a reason to not cover appropriate releases from the company.

We can't have every post be on Hikvision ;)

In all seriousness, we aim for ~15 posts per week, 60 - 70 per month and just scanning what we have covered in the past few months, there are maybe 2 or 3 per month on Avigilon, which I think is reasonable since they are one of the most common platforms used and competed against (i.e., even if you 'hate' Avigilon knowing what their moves are is useful).

UI1 - That is not a prudent method of understanding one's market.

Full Disclosure: I am a former Avigilon RSM.

You stated:

Your statement is not necessarily false (assuming you only mean closed channel), but as Brian pointed out, by many standards this is considered good for their dealer channel. I have personally been on all sides of the table on this point specifically, closed channel vs. open channel. However, will not discuss all the intricacies of each strategy here.

My point in replying is this; any one in the industry should take time to learn their competition. For example, I will never sell Hik, but understanding the market pressures, sales strategies, channel development, etc., helps me to understand how to compete against them.

I would recommend you to take time to learn how your competition is beating you in the market. We all lose at some point, take time to learn how and why. For example, if you do not sell AVO, but see here that they have released a camera that could put pricing pressure into your specific market, than the information here should be of great value.

UD #1 is you located in the US and if so which area?  Avigilon is not the only company that limits dealers per area as many other major manufacturers do this too.

As others have stated, IPVM is not exclusively for integrators.  As an end user who manages multiple ACC servers and hundreds of cameras (most of which are Avigilon), I am happy to see news of a new offering from Avigilon.  I can see the new camera model having a place in our future camera specs.

We currently use the micro domes, and I am happy to see a mini dome offering that, while not as small as the micro dome, will have WDR.

I would like to see a slightly more worldly approach when commenting on what AVIGILON does and doesn't do. I am getting the feeling that all comments on IPVM are based on what happens in the US predominantly which is not fair to subscribers from all over Europe and further afield. The business model in other parts of the world is different with a lot of business going through distribution channels. There also are many examples that I know of where the ACC platform is used with a variety of other manufacturers cameras. I think I have come across nearly every manufacturer possible. I can even remember a case with 9 year old Panasonic cameras, not ONVIF compliant, who were still able to stream to ACC. Yes in many cases the existing NVRs or VMSs were replaced with ACC but there are also plenty systems where Hik and Dahua have been used combined with ACC. John is right all non-Pro cameras are ONVIF and ONVIF only, there is no such a thing as an 'Avigilon' protocol for these cameras.

The addition of the new H4M Mini Domes is great news and we can't wait to see the first batch shipped.
