Published Jun 05, 2017 16:06 PM

IPVM ImageDeep Learning is a rising trend in many commercial security products, and now one entrepreneur wants to bring deep learning to residential security.

CEO/Founder Dave Selinger's company, Deep Sentinel has raised $7.4M from a number of investors, including Jeff Bezos to develop what he hopes will be a revolution in the home security industry.

In a recent conversation with IPVM, the CEO shared insights on the company and his vision for residential crime prevention. We analyze the opportunities and challenges of this approach.

Update: the startup says they "are now just weeks away from seeing the hard work of the whole team come to fruition".

They shared an image of what the camera looks like:

We are checking in with them for more information.

More from Deep Sentinel:

The company emphasizes:

Nothing in the market actually addresses preventing a crime in progress or intervening in an effective way!

So evidently they are aiming to solve that.

let’s see how they solve the problem that all existing battery cameras seem to have: missing the exact video from the event that triggered them.

To make the batteries last even as long as they do, the camera is essentially hibernating 99% of the time, with power being used only for a (non-video) motion sensor, and some sort of network listener.

This means that by the time the camera has ‘woke up’ to start recording and transmitting video, some time, usually measured in seconds, has elapsed.

Their pitch now is to speed up police response:

Related, a new 'study' from them discussed here.

Update: We ordered one to test. It is not scheduled to ship until next quarter so it will be some time before we post it.

Maybe all of this IPVM feedback is just part of smart market research by Dave Selinger and colleagues. Lots of valuable market and product feedback from lots of talented people, at no cost, before launching a product…. by making it look like the product is ready for launch.

Deep Sentinel, David Selinger, follow-up.   They missed their launch date (again) of 4th qtr. 2018.  Anybody know anything more….?

Hey Lee,

I've been in communication with Deep Sentinel. They're currently shooting for a January 4, 2019 launch, ahead of CES. I'm working on a post about the company and technology.

Is this a common security marketing technique: take common crime stories and report on them, and then show how better the outcome would have been with a product that doesn’t exist yet?????

Violent home invaders armed with a meat cleaver, a mace and a wooden pole attacked a Pennsylvania couple in their home recently. Two hooded strangers, a man and a woman, charged into Aric and Joey Maczis’s Littlestown PA house in the middle of the night.

Maczis immediately started to defend himself and his wife but the male invader began striking him with the meat cleaver.

“… it felt like we were going to die," Joey Maczis told Fox News and other local media.  “I didn’t think my husband was going to make it out," she added...

...Although the Maczis home was equipped with an alarm system, it failed to alert them to the home invaders.

“We have an alarm system that dings but we didn’t hear that because we were playing cards,” Maczis said.

If they had Deep Sentinel, the home invaders would have been intercepted before they even reached the door. Deep Sentinel combines the best artificial intelligence technology with the best 24/7 human surveillance. Our AI-enhanced cameras would have detected the invaders at the curb and instantly alerted our remote trained surveillance agents. They would have questioned the invaders through the camera’s two-way speaker and told them to leave. If the suspects had failed to heed the warning, our agents are authorized to immediately call the police

Sure, if there was a product then it would have instantly detected the home invaders at the curb, discerned their intentions using AI, then trained hostage negotiators would begin verbal engagement before they even reach the door.   No need to even bother the homeowner!

In some parallel ironic universe, the perfect response from the homeowner regarding why they had an inferior alarm system that only “dings” would be:

”We spent our upgrade money to pre-order a Deep Sentinel system, which should have been here by now.”

We respect the Deep Sentinel market research. They have done an excellent job of identifying a public/private “problem” with public safety, nationwide in the US. We believe they have not yet found the “solution”, as announced. Hopefully they will keep looking for a solution that has global application.

So it looks like the company has talked about its hardware, but has it said anything about its software, and whether it is self-authored or third party (say, Amazon Rekognition)?

This has to be one of the oddest looking cameras yet. I am very curious to read the test results when they come out!
