Hitachi Security Industry Profile

Published Feb 09, 2017 10:45 AM

Hitachi, bigger than Sony and Panasonic overall, with $89 billion USD 2016 total revenue, is expanding into the security industry. They are targeting public safety applications, with a product suite that includes video analytics and a PSIM-like platform. Unlike traditional security manufacturers, Hitachi is mostly pursuing a direct sales strategy, with a global sales force of ~1,000.

In a recent briefing, Hitachi outlined their latest products and approach to the security industry. In this report we contrast Hitachi's security offerings to other platforms, and describe where traditional security integrators and manufacturers might run up against Hitachi in the market.

I'm really torn about this one.  You can often judge a venture by the leadership.  Mark Jules is insane, but he's also a rain making natural.  If Hitachi tries to fence him in, this will fail.  If they give him room to run, and pour funding on him until past the point of discomfort, there's a solid chance he'll walk in to Hitachi HQ carrying five gallon buckets full of gold in return.  Darrin is the engineer version of Mark.  He's crazy, but he's also magic.

My bet is that we’ll hear absolutely nothing from them for several months, maybe a year or more.  There will be rumors that they’re doing really cool things with really cool agencies, but no one will really know for sure.  Then, like a bolt of lightning, they’ll announce a massive and incredibly complex $200M project.

Screw it, I’d work there.  It might not last, but it would be a hell of a ride, and if it works, it’ll be epic….

I'd bet even longer :)

Hitachi purchased Avrio group and Pantascene in 2014 as part of their public safety group.

Any deployments I have seen of the Pantascene PSIM have been when Avrio did a deployment, with some of these being initially funded because of a political convention or major event coming to the city.

Cites like Denver, St Paul, Charlotte and a few others.

We work with municipalities and Hitachi has most definately been telling their story.  We don't know of any implemented sites, but the customers are extremely interested in this solution.

but the customers are extremely interested in this solution.

Why? I don't understand what unique IP or technology Hitachi is offering. Any ideas?

I talked to them in depth about their offering about a year ago.  From what I remember, the platform looked really nice. It was a clean interface and integrated video, public transport GPS, Gunshot Detection, LPR, etc. I don't have a lot of exposure to other products like this, but theirs looked great. I remember a feature where you could search License Plates within defined areas of gun shots and compare with other incidents to find a trend of a vehicle being close to events. Going off my memory is dangerous, but I was very impressed with whatever reality was.

At that time, the majority of their revenue was coming from storage. That scared me because it's such a crowded market with so many sufficient solutions.

I hope that helps.

I can see the interest, but the cost is the killer.

Unless the DHS funding kicks in again.

Thanks for the report. Update 3 years later - Hitachi has been installing swarms of cameras in a city nearby where I live in Southern California. I service the area quite often and notice new city surveillance cameras quite regularly as of late. I know for sure the city budget isn’t huge so their offering must be competitive within their genre of surveillance solution scale.

Is this Moreno Valley, CA? I ask because records I just checked said Moreno Valley has spent nearly $1 million with Hitachi Vantara since 2018.

Correct - Moreno Valley. I guess $1 million doesn’t seem low budget. Lol ...Just curious. Perhaps someone might know the average budget for a citywide system of its size?
