I don't receive the surveys but I would say that Deep Learning starting to be adopted for surveillance use is intriguing. If implemented properly it could be game changing. The biggest disadvantage I could see is the absolute reliance upon the cloud which many enterprise customers are afraid of. So far it seems as though only overseas companies are actively pursuing Deep Learning based analytics for the SMB/Enterprise. I cannot believe there are no mentions of this.

I cannot believe there are no mentions of this.
Because it's really new and there are close to no mainstream shipping products with it. That said, I do agree with you that from a technological standpoint, 2016 definitely saw a major increase in interest in deep learning.
I don't receive the surveys

I agree , surveys can be misleading
But one thing is for sure is that the large Giants are trying to gobble up, secure their position in the global security marketplace and looking at the Tree of ownership you see a massive change in positioning.
That usually follows with price increase, change in distribution channels, and pricing structures.
What I have noticed is everytime a company get s acquired by another.
The cost of doing business increases
Usually at the Commercial, Industrial side of town 1st.
This TCO way of thinking is going to secure their future ownership as this generation does not seem to mind not owning anything.
Just leasing, renting, paying payments , day to day expense's.
Cloud thinking --- minimum cost with no ownership, and easy disconnect and disposable products
I'm in the 'Cybersecurity' camp for biggest 2016 surprise.
Granted, the actual targeting of networked security is not surprising, but the general industry apathy in dealing with it, and the lack of preparedness to address exploits are surprising to me.
2016 showed me Cybersecurity is one area where physical security and traditional IT are worlds apart.
I think any resolution to cybersecurity has to be end-user dictated at this point. While I could see that happening on the enterprise business end (it does already to a limited extent), it's less likely to occur in the SMB sector and will definitely not occur in the consumer market. If the Mirai botnet doesn't wise people up I'm not sure what will...
Yes, but even SMB IT routinely patches and updates firmware, closes off unneeded risky access, and expects vendors to be aggressive in fixing problems if not proactive in notifying them.
For many security vendors, 'don't rock the boat' and dragging feet in dealing with problems are the norm, not the exception.
