Who can forget how BRS Labs burned ~$100 million of mom and pop investments in their pursuit of whatever they thought they were doing. And that was horrible.
Now a new investment campaign, from robot maker Knightscope, is challenging those lows.

I've already told my guys that as soon as these robots get arms and hands with opposable thumbs they are all out the door! Oh, and an AI that actually works to make autonomous decisions. And a battery that lasts 12+ hours. And that can go over uneven terrain in the snow. And doesn't run over children or small animals.
Until then no need to worry.

Yes, I first called this out last month as a comment in the mini-IPO post.
After they continued to promote how much 'interest' they got, I decided to feature it as a post.
CEO: So, even after we filtered out all the employee/friends responses to our Mini-IPO, we still have around a million dollars in legitimate investment interest, from two investors that we can solicit. The first is from a mrrobot@gmail.com, do you wanna take that one?
CTO: Uh, is that some kind of joke? Pleeeze.

I can see why these would be popular at ASIS and not so much elsewhere. The largest protective services firm is pitching these every where they can. The protective services industry is big on being distracted by shiny technology objects with no feasible market potential for them. I cannot blame them as protective services are essentially commodities at this point.
How about covering the real robot from Sharp Electronics (yes, that Sharp) that was being designed for two years before finally being unveiled at ASIS? This one is on the level:

Another dumb move - setting up unrealistic expectations like 'Robocops for real' is great for getting initial interest but will surely lead to disappointed prospects and customers once they realize the numerous limitations of this device.
While I was in a coffee-stand line at ASIS, a Knightscope robot got in line behind me. I joked to the guy in front of me, wondering what the robot was going to order. But the funniest thing was this: A woman, not looking up from her cell phone, obliviously got in line behind the robot! Sign of the times I guess.
