So the most beneficial part of the extra IR feels like it's brightening a wider area

I kinda wish Hik would whip up a a dedicated PoE IR... something that's network controllable for half the price of a cam, would still be worth getting as opposed to just throwing another cam up as your not paying for another cam/finding somewhere to store that other footage...

something you could change the FOV and brightness of the various quadrants would be nice :) should not be hard, and make it nice and powerful, the Hik Turrets only consume something like 9w with PoE on, most switch's can push 24w no worries

Excellent report.

There is one fundamental limitation with EXIR: Even with longer IR ranges and more powerful / capable IR illumination, all cameras are limited by the PPF they can deliver at farther distances. Because of this, the Hikvision EXIR cameras tested captured minimal details at their max range due to the low PPF delivered at that point.

What lens option was used? Could this fundamental limitation be overcome or reduced by using one of the longer lens options?

4mm/83° on all cameras. There is a 6mm lens option available on all of them, I believe, and at least one has an 8mm option. The 6mm lens reduces the AoV to 54°, which should get you about a 40% increase in PPF.

The 2342 and 2T42 both have 12mm options.

I could see how the nighttime performance differs between the 4MP models but I find it very interesting that the daytime shots between the 4MP models differed as I always thought that everything within that series used the same guts when it comes to sensors and DSP's. The only things I thought they differed in was nighttime performance and housing styles. I was almost 100% sure that this was the case. Assuming you used the same lenses and everything, what do you think could be leading to the differences?

While the sensors (aka guts :) ) should be the same in a given series, you will find varying degrees of quality in the lenses. At least that's what we have figured out. This goes for Dahua cams too. We have found that the Dahua fixed lenses are far less clear on the edges of a view than the equivalent fixed Hik.

thanks for the test report. This shows current EXIR cameras are not as good as they claim. However, I think the camera tuning can be made better, they probably are using same sensor max gain as before, but they don't have to do this, they may reduce the sensor gain at better IR illumination, so that they can keep the brightness but has lower noise.

This test makes me to have more confidence in EXIR concept, and I look forward to seeing Hikvision to update their firmware to fix the issues and improve EXIR resolution.
