In the recent debates of Axis against Hikvision, a feature like this is a good differentiator for Axis that they should promote more.

Rather than have all your fixed 1080p or higher MP cameras stationary, having them digitally track subjects is quite useful for live operators to keep them focused / attentive to things of interest.

One downside, though, is if scenes go from low to high traffic. During low traffic times, it's likely useful but during high traffic ones, it would likely bounce around unhelpfully. The operator would likely then need to switch to the 'regular' / full stream view.

Seems like it would be fairly straight forward to provide a setting that automatically sets the autotracking scene to regular/full stream view if the number of objects being tracked climbs over a certain threshold. We were doing something similar with a system that used a single overview camera to drive multiple PTZ that would track objects moving through the overview scene. But could head off too much bouncing around if the number of objects overwhelmed the system's ability to gracefully stay focused.

VideoIQ used to have this feature in the View software. It still works in Avigilon View but hasn't been pushed to ACC. I hope it does at some point. When your looking at many cameras on one screen or trying to figure out what event trigged the alarm the auto digital zoom is very useful.

As camera resolutions continues to climb, the likelihood that you will ever display any camera at full resolution on a monitor declines.

Are monitors falling behind in the resolution race? Apple has a 5K IMac. LG has an 8K monitor coming. Sony's new 4k smartphone.

What percentage of surveillance operators are watching cameras on 5K IMacs? 0.01%?

There are 4K regular monitors, e.g., Testing 4K Monitors for Surveillance and we suspect some will use them but 3MP+ camera usage is rising much faster than 3MP+ monitor usage.

And again, even if you have a 4K monitor, that's at best (4) 1080p cameras by definition, compared to common displays of 9 or 12 or 16 cameras.

I refuse to sully this fine article with this minor bickering. I will see you in chat, sir. :)

This on the face of it a great differentiator for Axis. The set up reminds me of the early days of VMD (Video Motion Detection).. I remember haveing to block out the trees and bushes, then a parked car in the sun has a hot spot reflection and it goes off. I think this will really kick off when Axis (or someone) can enable a 3D setup, such as we are seeing in modern analytics.. That will be the game changer..

Great subject. I Agree. 3D setting is the only way to decrease false alarms when you are working with a deep Fov.

An other trick is to use dual/tripple trigger alarms (detect and cross for example, detect and face , or detect and track during minimum 3 meters, aso )
