Hi Ethan,

When using the Bridge, any word on WAN bandwidth requirements? Is it a matter of needing enough egress bandwidth to support camera bit rate times number of cameras? If so, is it up to the installer/user to configure each camera for a bit rate that will probably fit the pipe? I know there's mention of buffering video, but buffers need to be drained at a rate at least equal to that at which they're being filled. Which begs the question, what happens if the buffer fills up?

I work for Eagle Eye, and I wanted to answer your question, it's actually one we get a lot. Asking how much bandwidth you need for a camera is a lot like asking how much storage you need for a camera. The answer is that it depends on a lot of factors (resolution, frame rate, activity in the scene, etc...) With that being said, we think that a good rule of thumb is to allow 400kb of bandwidth for each IP camera (this assumes a 'normal' amount of motion and that you're only sending motion based events to the cloud.)

With regard to buffering, we have a wide range of local storage options. Our architecture is such that we buffer all the video locally, and then synchronize it with the cloud based on a variety of factors, including available bandwidth, time of day, user demand, and camera priority. Our entry level Bridge has 750 GB of local storage and we have devices with up to 50 TB of storage. So, if you don't have enough bandwidth to get all the video to the cloud, it can be stored locally. It is still a cloud managed solution and the end user doesn't need to know where the video is stored. Regardless of the location (local or cloud) the UI will figure out where it is stored and display it when it's requested.

Lastly, if the local storage fills up, and there's not enough bandwidth to send to the cloud, we start deleting the oldest video first. That's why it's important to size the device properly (determine how long the video needs to be stored, how much can be uploaded and then size the local storage appropriately.)

Hi Ethan.

I have a few comments and questions related to cloud based systems and Eagle Eye Networks:

In general, the market for anything cloud based seems likely to grow rapidly.

My guess is that cloud based systems are probably more appealing to smaller companies that prefer and are willing to pay for the conveniences of a cloud based system.

No theft of server with stored video is another advantage of a cloud based system in addition to some of the built in security features to help prevent cyber attacks.

Because a cloud based system requires most all the same infrastructure as a traditional VMS system, there’s not much risk to being stuck with a pig in a poke as it would be very easy to replace the Eagle Eye Bridge with a traditional VMS software/server if need be, at very little additional expense or time.

I’d like to see Eagle Eye Networks compared to some of the other leading cloud based competitors such as:

Secure-i (owned by Alarm.com)
VSaaS
iVideon

A potential stumbling block for Eagle Eye Networks or other cloud based companies that may rely on using a traditional dealer network with an outside sales force to sell their products could be:

How much commission does an outside sales person make selling a cloud based system vs a traditional VMS system?

Most likely the initial sell price and margin will be lower with a cloud based system, thus reducing the immediate commission and incentive for a sales person to promote cloud based over traditional VMS system. A workaround for this might be to model the commission structure after the alarm industry where the sales person gets a commission based on the term of the contract or some other formula that gives the sales person an incentive to sell this product.

There are challenges getting it to work with analog tag cameras. In general there are challenges anytime you use an analog encoder, which their gateway is, with tag camera as "ghosting" is a common problem. What's funny, is when talking to tech support and they never heard a "tag camera" before and never knew there was such a thing. :)
