Brian, Is the only way to power door hardware or rex devices by a secondary PoE splitter?

Is it stable from a network perspective? Did you try an NMAP scan?

I did not perform a NMAP scan. When I called the A1001 'stable', I mean to convey there are no apparent hiccups or random crashes with operation on my network.

I wouldn't really call the built-in software "Closed to Integration" when it's ONVIF conformant.

Hello Tyler:

The controller is ONVIF, not the included software (Axis Entry Manager).

Since releasing this test, several access control systems have integrated with the A1001 (including Milestone, Genetec, and Imron among others) but none of those are using ONVIF C to do it. In those cases, the parent access management platform is using the A1001 by writing custom extensions.

Calling the A1001 "closed to integration" can be misunderstood, because companies are doing it. But in order for integrators or endusers to add A1001s into a system with access, video, and other potential system integrations, you must use a partner platform. You cannot do it from inside or with Entry Manager alone.

In any case, the base "Axis Entry Manager" platform is not ONVIF C conformant.

Ah, I took what was written to mean that the device itself was closed to integration. True, Entry Manager itself doesn't offer any kind of integration. How would a UI be conformant to anything, though? It's just a layer on top of their Vapix APIs. That combined with ONVIF makes it, if anything, extremely open to integration--either through a partner or with a bit of custom code.

Partner applications could certainly be written as 'ONVIF C' conformant in order to integrate with the field of ONVIF C devices. This is the same situation in video (ie: ONVIF S), where both the camera and the recorder/viewer need to be conformant to work together per the framework.

But they aren't, and here's why: ONVIF's list of 'Profile C Conformant' products only lists the Axis A1001!

For platforms seeking to add the A1001, using the proprietary (but well known) Vapix API is conceivably easier and less risky at this point, than using the untested ONVIF C and only grabbing the A1001 anyway.

We have heard that other manufacturers are planning to release Profile C conformant products this year. But for now, ONVIF for access doesn't mean much. We elaborated on that point in our: Access Interoperability: Going Nowhere note.

ONVIF doesn't do door locks. It barely does video. Yeah, it's a closed system. There may be API docs but in a world where the docs went from (unavailable) to (look at our partners!) I would call that (obnoxiously) closed.

i am wondering if access controler A1001 fuction better with Axis Camera Station.

also if the live view its "live" with Axis camera station and what are the benefits to connect the A1001 to the ACS.

Not compatible with ACS…use A1601 for that. One could bring the A1001 in as a webpage to manage it, but no integration.

Does this support a "First Man In" option for unlock schedules? I can't find the answer in the manual. Seems pretty critical for the small mom & pop outfits they target.

I'm looking for a cheap 2-door standalone solution for a client. If we can support first man in, this seems to be a perfect fit. Otherwise, what other small systems should I be looking at?

Entry Manager does not, and Axis is unlikely to add it to the embedded software. In the past, the company has told us they do not plan to add functionality like this and instead point to Axis partners management software that does include it.

Is there an option to add access via the site's intrusion system? Bosch, DMP, Honeywell, Napco and many others typically offer an 'access add-in' module for their systems and that might be the least expensive approach. 'First Man Unlock' isn't always included, but it generally is for combo-systems.
