Pelco Responds to Criticism Impressively

Published Jun 09, 2014 04:00 AM

Companies tend to put their head in the sand when criticized, hoping it will go away and bitterly bemoaning that anyone would actually speak their mind.

Now, contrary to this, Pelco has delivered a powerful example of professionally responding and stepping up to criticism. Even more impressively, it is being lead directly by the head of Pelco.

The best thing for Pelco to do (and any other manufacturer for that matter) is to focus on the costumer. I think in terms of technology Pelco have step up and lever with other top manufacturers so now with the commoditization of the cameras and video surveillance equipment what is left is to offer a better service and focus on the customer as Herve Fages said.

Trafficware, a CUBIC Company

There isn't any money left for companies who just build hardware. With manufacturing moving more and more to slave labor to keep costs down, you need to be able to provide more than just a good box if you expect to win. Manufacturers who focus on taking care of their customers and find a way to profit from the big brains in their organization will win. Box pushers will continue to lose, and will get swallowed up by box pushers who are willing to pay their workers $5 a day so they can sell a camera for $199.

I have to admit Pelco is making an effort. It remains to be seen, however, if the effort is sustainable. In our case, both Herve Fages and their regional Sales Director have reached out to us in an effort to mend fences. The biggest issue is the lack of suitable Pelco product: they no longer make cameras that will fit in DF5 back boxes and their IP cameras cannot provide Multicast over ONVIF. We are waiting to see what their next step will be.

On the other side of the coin is the long-term viability of Pelco itself. I believe Scneider seriously misjudged the market. CCTV/Surveillance is not noted for having high margins and I believe Schneider's acquisition of Pelco assumed they could cut costs to increase profits, a move that even they admit backfired.

Although I am happy to see the return to the customer-oriented business model, I have to wonder if that move will "save" Pelco, considering the competition is even fiercer than it was when Schneider purchased them.

I also have to wonder if the recent moves to "spruce up" Pelco's image isn't a prelude to Schneider shopping the company around. If that is the case, I speculate that one logical suitor would be Dahua. In the tradition of Asian consumer electronics companies like Sanyo's purchase of Fisher and Funai's purchase of Sylvania, Emerson Radio, Magnavox, Philco and Symphonic, if Dahua purchased Pelco it would be a huge move and would open up the world markets.

I'll be watching closely to see how this plays out.

The Dahua / Pelco deal makes a lot of good sense to both sides.

Better than Hikvision / Pelco as Hikvision is much farther along on brand and channel development than Dahua.

Well, I have to wonder how sincere Pelco really is. 24 days ago, they were telling us they were going to resolve the problems we've had with their C10CH-6 cameras that have totally crappy image quality. Since then, the only thing I've heard is the crickets chirping.
