Show opens at 9AM CST today, will be interesting to see what kinds of crowds Chicago draws for ASIS this year.

I saw some cool stuff today, but nothing that blew me away. I always spend the first day wandering aimlessly and seeing what draws my eye. Nothing really did except for the cheap Stanley cup knock off which, as a diehard hockey fan, I found offensive in its lameness. Wednesday is meetings all day to either yell at vendors for sucking, whine to vendors about how much they want to charge us or to actually see new and cool stuff. For all the folks who are reading this now that will see me tomorrow have fun guessing which one you will be! Seriously though, the only thing that I was surprised by was AXIS and the card access piece. Curious what that is all about so looking forward to my meeting with them tomorrow.

Oh yeah, I did not hit Viscount yet for my $20 voucher mainly because I forgot about it. Hopefully they have some left!

3mp, 20fps and 1mbs? That's more like 75% bitrate savings and also bandwidth savings and also storage savings... :-). That is impressive if the quality is nice. Was there any movement in the scene? Where did this bitrate come from? I'm gonna have to look at these tomorrow.

Other big factor - what is the compression level? 3MP/20fps at 1Mb/s is possible with H.264 and lower compression levels even in moderate motion scenes.

Even if you like their H.265, you are almost certainly going to have to use their recorders as well given no 3rd party today and unlikely any support for some time.

John, just a small typo I've noticed. The Web link to Cognitec is directed to the wrong Website: Cognitech - Forensic Video Processing & 360° Photogrammetry instead of The face recognition company - Cognitec

Today was too busy to really comment on how it all went, but I was most impressed with Microsoft's GSOC overview. If I only had unlimited manpower and budget I am sure I could do almost the same thing. Unhappy that I had to sit through the whole thing and the only give away they had was an X-box game that the winner stared at like it was covered with Monkeypox. On the upside my wife won an iPad mini from someone or another so she once again proves it is worth brining your spouse.

The Pro V2 combines a camera, a video recorder, a strobe light, a loud siren, pepper spray and Bluetooth push-to-talk into one device: confusing?

Holy cow, I forgot the highlight of the day! One of my coworkers at her first ASIS show grabbed on to that cool (and very live) electeric fence. Left a red mark across her hand as a souvenir she will not forget!

I rode that tricycle yesterday and it was pretty cool but as a 6'3 guy I probably looked really strange on it. Also, the surround omni was getting a ton of attention. I showed it to at least 20 people yesterday alone. Can't wait for Arecont to release it and send me my demo unit.

As a vendor I must say traffic is lighter but the quality (large buyer ratio) is way up. More serious director level decision makers than curious integrators.

Since 2008 when traffic started declining, exhibitors have continuously remarked that 'traffic is down but quality is up'. Does that mean trade shows are more valuable now than before when traffic was at its peak? Or?

I think so.

We were continuously busy with demos, meetings, etc the first 2 days, and even today had a steady flow of people until I left at 11:45.

I think this is the first show I can remember where we didn't have a measurable number of "time waster" people... The ones who are there more the giveaways, or the guys that want to "talk shop" about some random thing, but have never bought anything (and you know they never will). I had exactly 1 of those conversations this week (and it was today right before I left).

The ratio of really good conversations to not conversations was high, which is a good thing. I don't mind lower visitor count volumes if it eliminates people who ultimately are only going to take time and resources without a chance of a return.

In walking around and talking to some friends at other companies, it sounds like results were mixed, and not really corellated to anything obvious. Some were busy, some were not. But it didn't seem floor-location or product dependant.

Every time I walked by Avigilon or Arecont or Brivo for example they seemed to have 5-10 discussions or demos going on at any given time. The Stanley booth always seemed to be filled with people (and, nobody died, to my knowledge).

Overall, I'm happy with the results from ASIS this year. We have less leads by volume compared to last year, but I think everyone we talked to was highly interested in followup conversations.

The convention center was very nice (IMO), but the lodging arrangements in Chicago are suboptimal. The Hyatt (attached to the convention center) was nice, but generally dead at night, and a cab ride from any good restaurants or bars. The downtown hotels were cheaper and closer to after-hours activites, but people were talking about 30-45 minute wait times and shuttle rides in the morning and afternoon. Cabs were easy to get most places, other than in front of the Hyatt when the show was closing (long wait times, not lack of cabs). Nothing against the Windy City, but it's not an optimal convention town.

Karas if you walked by the Arecont booth you should have came and said hello. I am disappointed!

I also had a lot of quality conversations at the exacq and Arecont booths. To be honest, the regional trade shows have more of the "pickers"that go around grabbing pens and notepads. I will reiterate what everybody has been saying and that is that the traffic was quality traffic filled with potential buyers. Not the window shopper variety. The Arecont and Exacq booths had some of the best traffic of any booths I saw. Glad to have them on our linecard.

Off topic: When I was a kid, a buddy tricked me into watching "Faces of Death" on VHS, and it burned into my young brain. Now, that memory bumped over a little and made room for Woz's dance clip.

...apparently he doesn't even care he is comedic relief? Totally cheapens the esteem of 'ASIS Keynote' speaker for all of future time.

Thursday, did any of you see the Acti women standing in the wide space between the Exhibit entrance and the exhibits? They were trying to scan anybody they could. They tried to look like they weren't vendors, holding a small shopping bag in one hand and not wearing an Acti shirt. I know they were Acti because I asked when the first one asked if she could scan my badge. I declined. It is my understanding they were asked to stop, but later I saw one a few aisles away from their booth doing the same thing. she stood with her back to a booth which had a wall so it would almost appear as if she belonged to this other vendor.

They have been doing this for years, even though it's clearly against show rules. They just do not seem to care.

All ethics / rules aside, if they can pick up the contact information of even a few hundred extra attendees, that's worth a lot of money considering these are people who have demonstrated their interest in security by traveling to a show.

Taking a CSI perspective, isn't ACTi the self-proclaimed "technology leader in IP surveillance?"

If leads is a priority, I'd expect booth design to enable a less intrusive video capture and analysis capability.

IPVM's video footage shows blue and white 3x5 badges supporting text and what seems to be a bar code, in a field of view that is roughly 3.5 to 5.5 feet from the floor.

First order, let's ignore motion blur and aspect issues. If legibility requires about 8 vertical pixels per character, on a 10 point font, that's about 80 vertical pixels per inch. Let's assume the digital code was comparable. What would you need to capture the majority of passing traffic?

720p delivers less than 4 vertical pixels per character, and 1080p delivers less than 6, but 4K delivers more than 11 vertical pixels per foot over a 2 foot vertical field of view. That's probably suitable.

What other show can support a total camera-studded booth? The lighting seemed very good. Maybe they already ARE catching the majority of passing traffic, and they just need to collect some high quality ground truth samples to refine their analytics.

CSI, anyone?

A manufacturer shared an interesting theory about the 'less traffic / higher quality' theme. He thinks the reason for this is that overall there is less motivation for people to come to shows and spend thousands (travel/meals/time), unless they have budget for a near term project and even then it's just one or two people rather than a big team.

That sounds sensible to me. The main question it does raise is whether this means booths should be smaller? Because (1) booths that are less full actually are a negative signal and (2) bigger booths cost a ton more money.

Saw a bunch of Sentry360 cameras riding the trains in Chicago.

Sentry360

I guess it speaks well for Sentry360 that their cameras are being used, but I also noticed there were 3 in the car, which seemed a lot. So useful for their 360 view, but depending on their resolution, the low pixel density of a 360 view means they felt needed more cameras in a close area for the detail they wanted.
